It does little good for ordinary Cubans who have lived for decades under dictator Fidel Castro since 1959 that he now freely admits communism has failed in his island nation.
The Cuban people — who might have made a tropical paradise of their country if they had been permitted political and economic freedom — instead have had to endure slave wages and severe political, religious and economic repression. Some have been imprisoned, tortured and even killed when they bucked Castro and tried to stand up for liberty. The oppression continues today.
But incredibly, Castro has now confessed what has been obvious for many decades: that communism is a failure.
A correspondent for The Atlantic magazine gained a rare interview with Castro, who handed over power to his brother Raul Castro a couple of years ago but has recently sought a return to the limelight he enjoyed for so many years.
The correspondent candidly asked Fidel Castro whether it is a good idea to export Cuba’s communist system to other nations.
But not only did Castro think spreading Cuban-style communism was a bad idea, he acknowledged it had failed even in his own country: “The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore,” the retired tyrant declared.
An observer who was accompanying the magazine correspondent during the interview confirmed that Castro made that amazing admission.
Of course, what Castro did not bother to mention is that communism did “work” for him personally. He has lived parasitically off his own people since the 1959 Communist Cuban revolution. He has enjoyed great luxury while his people have suffered needless deprivation.
With even Castro — the world’s “poster boy,” so to speak, for communism — admitting that system is a failure, shouldn’t other nations take heed and promote much more successful free markets and individual liberty?

What the Free Press didn't bother to mention is that Castro has already said the reporter misunderstood him.
You can question whether he was just covering for himself, but at least note that he did so.
Ask the Chinese if their brand of communism is a failure. Ask Americans if capitalism is a success. These are difficult times where the entire western world is coming unglued.
Be careful before gloating over difficulties in Cuba. They may be more resilient than we are.
Right on, Nuc.
The Republican devotion to enriching the already rich has created quite a few capitalist "parasitic tyrants" too, hasn't it.
BIG NEWS, Communism doesn't work! Castro admitting it is not working in Cuba now is pretty shocking. Ask China? I wish you could go and ask the average Chinese layperson how it is working out for him or for her. Some applaud economic advancements of the long-term communist nation without seeing who truly benefits from those advancements. It Is Not the common people. They are told how good the government is to them. But compare those high up in government with the people such as you and I and you will see quite a huge difference. By the way, why has the Chinese "brand of communism" been allegedly so successful? The reason is simple, they have loosened up and began to trade with non-communist nations. Just ask North Korea what continued resistance to that approach leads to. Please though, don't ask the leaders, ask the ones who labor as slaves barely surviving while their government and more specifically their "Great Leader" enjoy luxuries they cannot even dream about. Then come on here and rant about how bad we are in the US.
Calling North Korea communist is about as accurate as calling Greenland, well...Greenland. Or the Westboro Baptist Church describing itself as Christian.
North Korea is an isolationist authoritarian theocracy that has appropriated the term communist as a convenient excuse to justify a lot of nonsense.
