Amnesty provision rightly fails

The U.S. Senate has rightly turned back a misguided attempt to give amnesty to potentially millions of people who are in the United States illegally.

Disgustingly, Democrats in the Senate had attached the provision — the badly misnamed “DREAM Act” — to a vital national defense bill. They hoped that by doing so, they would make it impossible for Republicans to vote against the overall measure.

But it didn’t work. Republican senators, joined by Democrat Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor of Arkansas, fortunately managed to kill the measure.

Granting amnesty to illegal aliens has absolutely nothing to do with protecting our nation. To the contrary, it would reduce our national security by encouraging still more people to enter the United States unlawfully.

The defense spending bill now should be brought back up in “clean” form — without the addition of any “pet political causes” that would do nothing to ensure our national defense.

Those "pet political causes" from both parties are a huge reason for out of control federal government. They should not be allowed to hide such projects behind issues the people are in favor of. Where has the integrity gone?

The editorial staff at the TFP are to be commended for their complete masking of this issue and the complete masking of the GOP's reason for voting it down. P_O_L_I_T_I_C_S

T-FP, you do your readers a dis-service by equating the so-called "dream act" with "amnesty for illegal aliens".I understand that your editorials are your "opinion",but once readers make themselves aware of the facts, your "opinions only expose your fear-mongering for what it is. Ignorance is rampant in the south and y'all ain't helping.

DREAM stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors. It applies to children who were brought to the United States without their consent. They are illegal through no fault of their own, and they have no way to change that. The path to citizenship would be open to these minors once they graduate from high school, serve in the military, or complete two years of college - if they can pass criminal background checks. It is not "amnesty to potentially millions," only simple justice to 100,000 potentially solid American citizens. What despicable demagoguery on the part of the Free Press.

"Rightly fails!" Since when is it right to visit the sins of the fathers on the children? Shame on those who penned and published such heartless and intemperate garbage.

It didn't fail. It never got a chance to get past a blockade of a filibuster which did nothing to serve any of the process of debate, discussion, or whatever else was involved.

It would seem the editorial writer might not have understood the content of the bill to which he opined.

Or even the ostensible reasons cited for opposing it. I noticed most of the opponents claiming they opposed breaking the filibuster because they couldn't propose amendments.

Nothing more.

A provision of the DREAM Act that I feel doesn't receive enough attention is the pathway to citizenship for immigrants serving in the Armed Forces. Several of the Marines I served with in Iraq entered into our nation illegally, and served with honor and distinction. I feel that our nation owes it to these young men and women to recognize honorable service in the military as a path to citizenship.

good riddance to it.

for you liberals, illegal means they've broken the law......illegal aliens are her illegally....duh.....they're not supposed to be here. focus.....when you start out in a country as as lawbreaker then that's a have to start with the fact that they're here illegally..there is nothing else if you don't grasp that first......fix the borders...don't expect law abiding, tax paying citizens to feel comfortable with the idea that children of illegal aliens are automatically citizens. the fact that liberals label those that want to crack down on illegal aliens as zenophobes or racists speaks to the monumental disrespect they have for the law and the citizens that obey they law; and pay taxes.

you liberals are obsessed with nuance and sophistry, and ruled by emotions that cloud common sense and logic.'re incapable of being even handed. you claim to have empathy for illegal aliens, but only at the expense of law abiding citizens, tax paying citizens, which you only view as sources fo revenue to fund your agenda.

to ask people to accept that illegal aliens can roam around like sacred cows, as in arizona law ruling, free of the burden of having to identify themselves, like the rest of us do for nearly everything we do is disgusting.

you liberals act as if you have a greater sense of empathy for the plight of the mexican communtity, or, for the black community, for that matter..but you just use them to further your agenda...which is getting as much control over peoples lives as possible...

Booboo99 (an earlier post) is a fake, a fraud, an impostor. Notice the bad grammar, the text in all caps, the race card, and the idiotic statement that "All illegal immigrants should have the right to live in USA." You went too far, Booboo99. There is neither a conservative nor a liberal as dumb as you portray yourself to be. (But then you would have to be pretty dumb to think so.)
