The Tea Set

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The House tea baggers are itching for a gun fight and they think shutting down the government will add another notch in their belt.

Speaker of the House, hard drinking, hard-tanning, chain smoking, John Boehner, has first dibs on the PB. He had to cut a deal with House Democrats the last time tea baggers threw a temper tantrum, but he better not try it again.

The baggers have already talked about knocking John of Orange out in the primary next year.

I've said it before so, what the heck: Republicans are more interested in politics than policy.

They think shutting down the government will save us money!

They think shutting down the government will create jobs!

They think shutting down the government is good policy!

Why? I told you. They are more interested in politics.

Next round of Pepto's for the rest of us to help endure more tea baggers hollering, 'Cut It or Shut It.' If you would like to drown out the cacophony and 'who-ha' ralleys, research the laws in your state on impeaching or recalling elected officials.

Tea baggers might think they are in a show down at high noon on the Capitol steps with Obama but they're only going to shoot themselves in the foot.

In the mean time, please pass the Pepto.

am i or this country better off than i was in 2008?

I don't remember it that way. What I remember is that in 2008, this country was on the brink of a second great depression. Banks were basically frozen and not lending any money. The housing bubble popped. Two years later, we are still dealing with that, and man times are rough. I sure haven't gotten a raise since then. But I have a job still. A lot of folks don't. But the cliff we were on was a steep one. Yeah, I wish we were recovering better. And there is a lot of room for debate about how recovery could be and could have been improved. But things like the loan that was made to GM (that was paid back) were a step in the right direction - if GM had bankrupted we would have lost hundreds of thousands of US jobs. Here in Tennessee we have given millions to foreign companies like VW to create jobs, well, the money that was LOANED to GM saved a LOT of American jobs, of people who work hard and pay taxes - management and labor. The stimulus funds kept this economy from seizing. Some will argue it was too much, others will argue it was not enough, but it kept us from falling off that cliff. It was a step in the fight direction - maybe too big a step, maybe too small - but it came at a time when the situation was dire. So, yes I am better off than I was in 2008, and I am certainly better off than where we were headed in 2008. To deny that is, imho, unrealistic. Look, we've tried two big experiments with "tickle down" economics in the fairly recent past. Both resulted in the richest getting richer, the poor staying poor, and the middle getting squeezed to pay for both. So yeah, being in the middle I do feel squeezed, and my resources are shorter. Absolutely. But the rich man is taking as much of those resources as the poor man. It is the working people in the middle carrying both.

najones75 hit the nail on the head. I just don't understand how anyone can believe our country can continue to spend money we don't have. 1 trillion dollars is a staggering amount of money. But consider this: The National debt is OVER 14 TRILLION DOLLARS as of March 21, 2011 and Federal spending is over 3.5 trillion dollars people. We have a Federal budget deficit of more than 1.3 trillion dollars. We hear all about Social Security and Medicare breaking the bank, but that is a drop in the bucket to where tax dollars really go. There are over 1,607 federally funded Aid Programs. How many of them contain waste and fraud? I’d say they all contain wasted tax dollars, and most probably involve tax dollar fraud as well. Our Gross National Product in 2009 before the crash was only 14 Trillion dollars. Our country and economy cannot sustain the load. - Both parties put us here and both parties should be willing to cut spending to the bone to get us out!

TheTea Party. Assorted right wing crackpots and conspiracy theorists who don't like or trust anybody who can pronounce a three-syllable word.

When they are told that lowering taxes increases federal revenue, they love the sound of it and they buy it, that if taxes are raised on multi millionaires and billionaires, then their taxes must also be raised on their sub-100k salaries...this is stated as a fact of nature and they buy it. When they were told Iraq needed to be occupied by the USA they never batted an eye because they know in their hearts that God wants America to rule the world anyway. They support deregulating the corporate and financial sector because after all 'society' would be safer and better with no government at all…except in your personal life.

The Tea Partiers ardently believe that the less you invest in government the stronger your nation is. In other words, the people on the right side of politics, those most conservative and nationalistic and inclined to wage war...the very people who encouraged G. W. Bush to become the worst president in American history, to destroy the American economy and ruin America's reputation as the global good guys - those are the Tea Partiers.

These are the very people who were at the forefront of horrible policy making that put the USA in a hole as deep as an open pit mine; a hole so deep that if not for the unprecedented steps of the federal government, America would be on her knees today and thereby offering the same temptation to tyrants that was offered to the Germans when the Great Depression crippled us.

Having failed to lead their country when they had the reins, these selfish fools decided to invent a patriotic name and pretend they had nothing to do with the national tragedy which they had caused. However, The Tea Party is all too predictable...they claim that if the government that stepped in and pulled their nation out of the fire had done nothing...everything would have been just fine.
Ask a teabagger the next time you see one. “Excuse me Ms. Tea Parry Patriot. Is that you’re ass, or a hole in the ground?” They don't have an answer.

Your point, “both parties put us here because we are unwilling to elect public servants who have the courage to make tough choices” is interesting, but I disagree with your overall premise, “We, the people, did it to ourselves.” We the people did NOT do this. We the people are not our government anymore.

It has been transformed into a corporatocracy. It has flipped the sins of pride, greed, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and sloth to be virtues, and those of humility, sharing, love, compassion, self-control, moderation, and passion to be sins. In this new paradigm, to sacrifice profit for some presumed social or environmental good is immoral. The result is a modern culture that proclaims greed is a virtue and sharing is a sin. Meanwhile, we recognize this perversion but may fear to speak up (or blame themselves) because so many —including even their religious leaders— assure us in so many words that greed is good, even that God wants us to be financially rich and financial wealth is a mark of God’s favor. Christians posting here should’ve been the first to see this perversion!!

If we realize that this is driving us to self-destruction, we can put the perversion behind us and secure the future of our children. Your post shows that your heart knows this.

For the record, I am a practicing Christian - and I say "practicing" because understanding my relationship with the Creator has been a lifelong learning experience and I still don't have it right. In my opinion, if there is a single book of the Bible that is relevant to the 21st American experience, it is probably Amos. Or, if you want to read a secular book that communicates a similar message, try Jim Wallis' "God's Politics". That second recommendation comes with a warning ... Glenn Beck has labeled Jim Wallis as a communist.

I agree. The department of education is only one federal department that is not essential along with many that are bloated and cumbersome. Most people can't comprehend how big the fed has become. The potential shut down indicated only those deemed essential will remain working. Over 800,000 will be furloughed. Does that give anyone a clue regarding essential versus nice to have?

The fed should return authority and responsibility to the states except where expressly defined as a federal responsibility by the constitution. Those in federal government twist the words and intent to grab power and control.

I predict a reconciliation and passing of the budget today or if there is a shut down it will not go past Monday. Too many federal employee votes at risk to allow them to miss a pay period. Both parties are more concerned about which will be blamed and the political implications instead of the core issue of the national debt.

It doesn't matter why the democrats didn't pass the budget when they had control and possibly should have, they didn't and now a budget needs to be agreed on.

I don't understand the republicans reluctance to do away with ethanol and oil company subsidies. I don't understand the democrats insisting on federal tax payer funded abortions and other non-essential social programs.

The lack of understanding of the eventual impact of a growing national debt by both parties and voters is frightening. We are funding three wars and can't afford even one of them. Afghanistan is what crumbled the Russian empire and they are now laughing at our being in that quagmire with similar results.

Think about how much U.S. wealth is consumed by our dependence on middle east oil and our military involvement in that region and now Libya.

I find it amazing that Sea Monkey now shows a disdain for Republicans and claims there is a separation between being a Conservative, being a Republican, or being a Tea Party member. Here we go again. This is typical right-wing hypocrisy and justification at its best. Tell me Sea Monkey, if the Tea Party movement is so strong, then why not campaign and govern as a party, or at the least as independents. Every Tea Party candidate could exemplify independence by refusing to accept any financial assistance from the Republican party, or any PAC's controlled by the party. The Reform party in the 1990's actually showed independence by doing this very thing. Again though, like most hypocritical extremists, he has to justify his claims with lies and ignorance. As for the Tea Party being grass roots, consider this fact. Last year when they held their “convention”, Tea Party favorite Republican Representative Michelle Bachman had to withdraw at the last minute when it was discovered that the convention was organized in a manner that made it illegal for a current member of congress to speak. The convention not only paid speaking fees to people like Sarah Palin, but the financial disclosure statements disclosed the organizing group as a “for-profit” organization. So much for grass roots huh? There are Conservatives in the Republican Party, Democratic Party, and the Libertarian Party. While Sea Monkey continually runs from the truth, there are signs that the American publics are sick of the Tea Party movement already. The movement was successful in rallying the Republican base. However, they simply cannot compete on the big stage. Refer to the elections of 1984 and 1996 for a good history lessons my friends. The Tea Party’s greatest accomplishment will be in ensuring President Obama’s re-election for a second term. Of course Sea Monkey will blame that on the Republicans that he now hates. A challenge for you my dear brine shrimp friend. Look up all the candidates that won election in the November 2010 election that considered themselves “tea partiers”, and see how much money they received from the Republican party or any of its PAC’s. Then, research all candidates that are considered as Conservatives by any respectable organization that tracks and rates these politicians. See how many are Republicans, and see how many have procured earmarks and not only introduced wasteful spending legislation, but supported other wasteful spending projects. In a war of factual dialogue Sea Monkey, you are unarmed. Lay back down and replay your TIVO recording of Glenn Beck and let intelligent Republicans and intelligent Conservatives defend their ideology in this forum. You are doing them an unfair injustice. Hopelessly wishing, Tmbrwlfofga

Have you ever considered that while close-minded people like you cancelled their subscriptions, open-minded people have replaced you as subscribers. Surely someone who tries to defend freedom and the constitution does not think that a newspaper should hire a political cartoonist that makes everyone happy. Newspaper subscriptions are down all across the nation. This entirely due to the availability of online services for most news sources. People like me that subscribe to the physical newspaper, generally due so because we like the "feel" of a traditional newspaper. My suggestion for you is to do what I do. When something is on television and I don't like, I change the channel. When I see something in a newspaper or magazine I don't like I don't read it. If the entire publication does not suit me, then I don't buy it. As I have stated before, it is hilarious how people like you come into this forum everyday and complain about Clay Bennett. The advertisers for the online version love you for that. In fact, every time you "hit" on this website, I can hear a cha-ching downtown at the Times-Free Press building. Thanks for your support! Excuse the subject change. Something you mentioned caught my attention. “banning the return of about 1 million rifles from Korea”

From what I’ve read, this is the reason for the halt on importing Garand’s and Carbines:

Korea received them:

1. Through a US Military Assistance Program, in which case they were given to S Korea on condition that they could never be re-sold.

2. Through a US Military Sales Program, in which case they paid for them, and can do with them what they want, including re-sell them.

Here’s the rub -

Seems Korea 'lost the receipt' that proves they paid for them, entitling them to sell them to an importer in the US. In fact, Korea likely got them free, and if they want to send them back to the US govt for free, they would be accepted, and would end up in the hands of the CMP (which is ok by me). However, they want the cash, so they are trying some shenanigans, suggesting they don't know why the sale isn't going through. They do.

The policy makes sense, even if we don’t like it. - if we allowed them to re-sell stuff, suddenly governments all over the world that had received US assistance (or are still getting it) would take stuff our taxes paid for and re-sell them to turn a profit.

I purchased a Springfield (Service grade) Garand from CMP a few years ago. I like it a lot! Under 4 MOA @ 200 meters, with Lake City ammo :-) Next on the list is a Carbine. I hope they can work this out and get some to CMP.

"A financial blogger and ex-CEO credited with being one of the original "founders" of the Tea Party has come out against the movement, saying it has been hijacked by the very people it was protesting and is now obsessed with "guns, gays and God." In a "message" to the Tea Party Wednesday, Karl Denninger declared that he "ought to sue" anyone who uses the Tea Party name "for defamation." "Yeah, that's a joke," he writes. "But so are you. All of you. Especially Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, and douchebag groups such as the 'Tea Party Patriots.'" Denninger writes: "Tea Party my ass. This was nothing other than the Republican Party stealing the anger of a population that was fed up with the Republican Party's own theft of their tax money at gunpoint to bail out the robbers of Wall Street and fraudulently redirecting it back toward electing the very people who stole all the **ing money!"

I think that the Tea Party is just a flash in the pan.

Big Ridge Patriot,

I know that sometimes you shy away from facts, but I can't help but feel compelled to help you out a bit my friend.

Big Ridge Patriot writes, "Maybe you are right! TFP values pennies earned on internet clicks drawn by dimwitted ideologue cartoonists more than subscriptions...It is the only credible explanation. With a business model like that I suppose the problem will eventually take care of itself."

Just so you know, the newspaper and magazine industry receive on average as an industry standard, only 20% of their revenues from circulation. The industry in general receives nearly 80% of their revenues from advertising, both in their online versions and print versions. There are several papers trying to increase their circulation revenues, so I thought it would help you to read a few sources of this information.

However, addressing your statement, you should know that of course the TFP values pennies earned on Internet clicks more than subscriptions. Just so you know, the TFP is a "for profit" business, not a non-profit agency. If you know anything about business, sustainable profitability is the goal, not satisfying a small number of disillusioned customers. But as I stated before, each time you "click" on this page, you made the TFP some money. They love Clay. People like you and I, click on this page several times a day and they can show their potential advertisers real numbers and facts. ( I see an ad for Hautelook and SafeAuto right now!) Not only that, with Clay being Liberal, his "base" is drawn into the mix with an average of 5 to 1 over his detractors. For the most part, people that don't like his cartoons simply ignore him. Thanks to you, the TFP will continue to have sustainable advertising for years to come.

Keep that in mind the next time you get ready to spend some advertising dollars. BTW, I hear local talk radio gets a very good return for your advertising dollar.

You should say something good about people or nothing at all. Chris Dodd said as he encouraged the senate to not support Bob Corker's proposal to include in the financial regulations that banks require a 5% down payment on a house. Dodd said; "It should not be included it would restrict home ownership to only those that could afford it". How unfair is that?

Mr. Dodd is retiring....good.

Pelosi insist old people will starve if a budget cut is made. She doesn't trust families and local people, charities and churches to prevent that. This suggest she doesn't think People will help themselves or help others so the government must do it for them. She looks better than she would without plastic surgery. You can tell she is a good grandmother the way she views everyone as her kids that she has to watch out for. Not having her as speaker of the house is bad but not as bad as when she held the speaker position.

See, you can say something good even if the person is an idiot or if they are so egotistical they think they know what is best for everyone.

Thanks Big Ridge Patriot for scaring off the advertisers. Your ignorance is apparently as big as your hypocritical self-serving ego. Yes indeed, I can see it now. The director of marketing for SAFEAUTO is pulling the plug on TFP advertising based upon your assessment. I imagine it goes something like this:

Director: Sir, we are pulling our ads from the TFP. CEO: But why, doesn't the Bennett cartoon get tons of hits each day from people that support and complain about it? People, that sees our advertising regardless of whom they support? People that have to click on the section just to get into it? Director: Yes sir your right. However, there is this guy named Big Ridge Patriot. And well sir, he doesn't like Mr. Bennett. Apparently he speaks for all Republicans in the Chattanooga area. So if Big Ridge Patriot says so, it’s got to be the truth. CEO: Well, where are you going to take our advertisements to now? Director: Well, the talk radio stations have the same angry four listeners everyday. Also, I hear advertising on the Glenn Beck show is dirt-cheap right now. CEO: Good call my friend. Also, see if you can buy some ad time on one of the 700 Club shows. You know that Pat Robertson is King of the hypocrites with his illegitimate child and all. I bet you folks like Big Ridge TIVO that crap! Director: Thanks Big Ridge Patriot for setting it straight

Again my friend Sea Monkey, this is an OPINION piece. Do you even know what propaganda is? And of course I am preaching to the choir. Do you even know what that phrase means? Listen moron, Clay is a Liberal Democrat. We all know that. Again though, TFP advertisers want to thank you for clicking on the page and being a part of what has been hailed as a stable newspaper due to high ad revenues. Preaching to the choir by the way is a colloquialism that signifies someone stating something to a large group of people, that the group is already well aware of and in great detail. Of course that’s what I was doing. This large group knows that you and Big Ridge Patriot are dishonest hypocrites like most people that hide as Conservatives. Moreover, you tend to hide behind the sheets that you were to your clan rallies on Friday nights. You should get your mother to buy you a thesaurus and hooked on phonics, my side is sore from laughing at your feeble attempts to communicate using the English Language. Mean Spiritedly Yours, Tmbrwlfofga

Wow, it looks like you've met a mirror image of yourself. I may have nightmares tonight....... (I'm not referring to the timber wolf, btw)

Monkey, it's hard to read through all the spittle; would you explain "hyphenated americans"? Is that a sexist slur, an anti-immigrant slur, or a racist one? Is there any group of people that is not exactly like you that you do NOT hate?

A number of people here today have lowered the bar so far that we will need a shovel to dig it back up. Sigh....

Comforting to see that, once again, Clay's least-substantive offerings get the most posts. All is well.
