University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Steven Fox shot a 5-under-par 67 at Council Fire Golf Club to earn medalist honors in a Tennessee State Open qualifier on Monday. Local amateur Steve Johnson finished second at 72, and UTC assistant coach Ben Rickett advanced with a 75, as did Knoxville pro Randy Wylie and amateur Chris Schmidt. UTC junior Stephan Jaeger qualified for the State Open as well by shooting a 76 in the Knoxville-area qualifier that former Baylor golfer Ryan Thornton won with a 2-under 70. The State Open will be played May 9-12 at Brentwood Country Club.

• INDIANAPOLIS - The Lee University men's golf team is tied with league rival Shorter for third place in the NAIA Brickyard Classic after Monday's round. Malone and Johnson & Wales shot 296s to share the lead, and the Flames and Hawks shot 301s. JB Eksteen led Lee with a 73, and Tyler Smith shot a 74 with Caleb Robinson and Jeremy Lawson carding 77s. Sam Bedwell, returning from a knee injury, had a 78.

• NIOTA, Tenn. - Host Tennessee Wesleyan is winning the TWC Invitational men's golf tournament after Monday's first round at Springbrook. The Bulldogs shot 295 with Michael Alread and Tyler Smith registering 73s and Wesley Farris, Zach Cole and Casey Flenniken coming in at 74, 75 and 76. Milligan is second at 299 in the nine-team tournament, with another Wesleyan team sixth at 312 (led by Hunter Dees' 76) and Bryan seventh at 317 with Dean Hoare shooting a 73.

Tennis

• The UTC women's tennis team assured itself of a first-round bye in the Southern Conference tournament with its 4-3 home win over Davidson on Sunday. Now 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the SoCon, coach Jeff Clark's Lady Mocs are in fifth place and hold the tiebreaker over sixth-place Elon with two league matches left. The league tournament, for women and men, will be in Chattanooga this year, April 20-23, at the Champions Club. Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh won together and in singles for UTC against Davidson, and seniors Grace Robinette and Annie Green pulled out the No. 3 doubles win that clinched the doubles point for the home team. Charlotte Bossy also won in singles.

Baseball

• Lee center fielder Jonathan Clark was the Southern States Athletic Conference baseball player of week for his play in the second-ranked Flames' four games last week. Clark was 8-of-17 (.471) with a home run, a double, seven runs scored, six driven in and three walks. He stole two bases. The Flames are scheduled to play today at Bryan.

Auto Racing

• Tanner Works of Cleveland got his first Late Model race win Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway by taking the second of two 25-lap features. Veteran Lamar Scoggins of Cleveland won the first 25-miler, with John Owenby second, William Thomas third, Justin Litchford fourth and Brian Pritchard, Bobby Mayse and Works fifth through seventh. Pritchard finished second in race two, and Thomas, Scoggins, Rick Hixson, Mayse and Jason Welshan completed the top seven. Booger Brooks got his third Limited Late Model win of the young season, and Jason Brown, Scott Ledford and Matt Patton won in Hobby, Pony and FWD, respectively.
