Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant will mark a milestone Friday related to the production of its 2012 Passat.

The automaker plans to have a ceremony Friday afternoon featuring its employee work force, management and "a special guest" whom it would not identify.

VW officials have said over the past several months that they were ramping up to produce the first customer car.

The $1 billion plant is assembling an all-new Passat that is to go on sale in late summer.
