SoCon men's golf: UTC leads by four

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is one day closer to reclaiming the Southern Conference men's golf championship.

The Mocs shot even-par Monday and own a perilous four-stroke lead over Georgia Southern, a five-shot lead over Samford and a six-shot lead over UNC Greensboro through two rounds at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence.

Two other teams are within eight strokes of the Mocs. A comfortable margin is usually considered 10 shots heading into a final round.

"About 10 shots can go away in two or three swings," said UTC coach Mark Guhne, whose team won three straight championships before Furman claimed the 2010 title. "We played a great front side today and stumbled a bit on the back.

"We let some teams back in the golf tournament."

UTC junior Stephan Jaeger and freshman Chris Robb are tied for fourth place individually at 2-under-par 142. Jaeger shot even-par 72 on Monday while Robb shot 71.

Sophomore Steven Fox, freshman Davis Bunn and freshman Benni Weilguni are tied for 16th place at 146. Bunn shot a 72 Monday while Fox and Weilguni shot 73s.

Davidson's Richard Fountain, GSU's Lewis Gruber and Samford's Casey O'Toole are tied for first at 140.

"Everybody is playing solid, and I think that if we put up par, I think we'd be good," Guhne said. "I'd really like to have somebody shoot in the 60s, which we haven't had.

"We're right there, and now we have to get it done."
