• What's special: All jewelry pieces made by Barry Bogo Jewelry are customized to each customer's needs based on designs drawn up during in-office consultations. The pieces are also priced at cost, which is normally offered only to retailers, Bogo said. "We work to create whatever the person wants, exactly. It's not cookie cutter."

• The origin story: In 1972, Bogo's father started a diamond importing and jewelry manufacturing company, at which Bogo began working in 1990. In 1998, he sold the company to a group of investors but stayed on to run it for seven more years. In 2004, he founded his own company emphasizing face-to-face sales over retail or wholesale.

• How long does it take to make: From consultation to delivery, jewelry generally requires two weeks.

• Where it's sold: Bogo has customers all over the country, but all orders are drawn up by appointment.

• What it costs: Pieces can cost as low as a few hundred dollars up to several hundred thousand dollars, depending on materials and the intricacy of the design.

• Lessons of the trade: "I've built an extensive network of suppliers from all over the world, and 21 years of building relationships has allowed me to work with companies who can supply me with the best possible goods at the best prices," Bogo said.
