Rain may precede Brainerd tourney

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Inclement weather has marred the last two Brainerd Invitational golf tournaments, even forcing the 2009 version to be cut short a day.

Another deluge looms this week, ahead of the tournament set to run Saturday and Sunday at Brainerd Golf Course.

But club and tournament officials aren't too worried.

"The course drains real well, and unless we get a soaker in the middle of the day, or an all-day rain, we should be OK," pro shop manager Edwin Prichard. "If it comes down heavy on Wednesday, we should be fine for the weekend.

"We'll try and get it in the best we can."

Entries for the tournament - more than 75 are already in - close Tuesday at midnight. They can be found at www.IfYouLikeGolf.com.

"My benchmark is 75 golfers, and any time you go over 75 for a two-day event, I think you're doing well," said tournament co-director Mike Jenkins. "As for the weather, I don't worry about it. With two rainy tournaments in a row, we're due a good weekend."
