Seniors awarded scholarships
The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society recently named four Whitfield County and Murray County high school seniors as 2011 scholarship winners for their contributions to preserving local history, according to a news release.
Emily Manis, Jessica Lewis and Elliot D. Bagby of Northwest Whitfield High School will receive the Dorothy Sapp Seaton Scholarship. Trenton Elisha Smith of Murray County High School will receive the James Loughridge Memorial Scholarship.
Smith interviewed his grandparents about his great-grandparents, Manis wrote a paper on the Manis Grocery in Cohutta, Lewis wrote a paper about being a teenager in the 1950s and Bagby interviewed his grandmother for a family history project.
The students will be recognized at their schools' honors days and at the society's preservation awards program on May 15, the news release stated.
They also will receive one-year memberships to the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society.
The First National Bank of Chatsworth funded this year's scholarships.
City plans Sunday alcohol sales vote
Woodstock City Council members have directed the city manager to prepare for a November vote on whether to allow alcohol sales on Sundays.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the council still has until late June to make a final decision on whether to hold such a vote, but council members didn't want to wait to begin preparations for a possible ballot measure. The council decided Monday night to ask the city manager to prepare for it.
The Georgia Legislature passed a bill this session allowing cities and counties to hold referendums on selling alcohol at stores on Sundays. Gov. Nathan Deal has not yet signed the measure into law.
Woodstock is among the latest Georgia communities whose officials have discussed possible votes on the measure. Others include Cherokee County and the cities of Smyrna and Kennesaw.
Dalton Mayor David Pennington has indicated he will push to put Sunday sales on the ballot in that city as soon as possible.
Family finds stolen Jeep during swim
Members of a family who took a dip in a Savannah pond told police they felt something strange with their feet.
WTOC-TV reports the object discovered during the family's swim Monday turned out to be a Jeep.
Police said they pulled the Jeep from the pond Monday night and ran a check on the license plates.
WSAV-TV reports the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee had been reported stolen on Thursday.
Gena Moore of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said the vehicle will be returned to its owner.
Moore said the Jeep was severely damaged, and she doesn't know how much use it will be after being sunk in the pond.
