Multi-sport standout Kayla Sewell has decided to continue playing two, maybe three sports in college. The Walker Valley senior has committed to play volleyball and basketball with NCAA Division III member Sewanee and said most likely she'll play softball, too.

"I really don't have a favorite," said Sewell, who has a 3.9 grade point average and will be receiving scholastic scholarship money. "It changes every season.

"I know it's going to be hard. I'm just going to have to work hard the most on academics."

Within the last year Sewell was selected to the first team on the 2010 Times Free Press Best of Preps All-Area softball and volleyball teams. She was a second-team choice on the 2010-11 girls' basketball team.

Lady Mustangs softball coach Lauren Linburg said Sewell has been an anchor at first base for four years and has routinely batted in the Nos. 4 and 5 spots in the lineup. She is batting .301 (22-for-73) this spring with two home runs among her nine extra-base hits and she has 15 RBIs. During her all-star season last year she batted .339 with 15 extra-base hits, including three home runs, and led the team with 39 RBIs.

Sewell's volleyball statistics steadfastly increased throughout her prep career and she wound up with 269 kills, 99 blocks and 341 digs in her senior season playing for coach Judy Pruett. In first-year basketball coach Jan Spangler's system she averaged a little less than 10 points and eight rebounds per game.

"She is so gifted athletically, and she's a great student," Limburg said. "She would have to be to play three sports. I'm so proud of her and can't wait to see what she will do in the future."

Sewell said she plans on majoring in pre-law.

Grant picks Sewanee

Jordan Grant, a member of GPS's Division II-AA state-championship volleyball teams in 2007 and '08, has committed to continue her career in college at Sewanee.

Grant, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 4, had amounted 116 kills and 114 digs entering her senior season. She then totaled 271 kills and 407 digs last fall and also had 58 of her 65 career aces and 55 of her 88 career blocks as a senior.

"You could see the growth every year," said Paul Brock, coach of the Bruisers and her uncle. "She's a diabetic, which is something she has to cope with. It amazes me she's able to perform at the level she does. She went from being a role player her first three years. Then all those seniors left and she got her chance."

Grant said playing college volleyball was only a dream when she started in sixth grade, but by her junior year began realizing it was possible. She said she was contacted by Sewanee coach Jessica Cortese and, after a few conversations, applied at the school.

"I went up there and fell in love with it," Grant said. "I'm very, very excited about playing college volleyball."

Grant, who has a 3.3 GPA at GPS and will receive academic financial aid at Sewanee, will major in pre-med.
