Twelve current and former members of the Baylor Swim Club are competing this week at the United States Swimming national championships at Stanford University at Palo Alto, Calif. Beyond awarding national titles, the meet determines participants in the Pan American Games and the FINA World Junior Championships. Current Baylor Swim Club members taking part are Christian Carbone, Spencer Rowe, Ashley Vance, Kristen Vredeveld and University of Virginia swimmer Nathan Vredeveld. Rowe and Vance are getting ready for their freshman years at Georgia and Ohio State, respectively. Former club members representing their colleges in the nationals are Alison Lusk with Kansas, Greg Roop with Harvard, Brett Roberson with Georgia, Reese Shirey and Anna Rae Gwarjanski with Alabama and Sloane Pitman and Troy Tillman with Tennessee. "I am delighted to have this many of our kids competing at the nationals," said Baylor Swim Club coach Dan Flack, also the Baylor School coach. "It shows that the program we have built here has evolved into one of the best in the country, not just based on one or two kids. It will be great to see everyone."
Golf
- Hunter Cornelius, a Ringgold resident about to begin his freshman year at the College of Coastal Georgia, is a new recipient of the Yates Scholarship given by the Georgia State Golf Foundation to employees or dependents of employees at Georgia State Golf Association member courses. He actually is a Barnsley Gardens Named Scholar under the Yates program umbrella. Cornelius, who tied for 10th overall and was the second low amateur in the Georgia Open this past weekend, has worked at Battlefield Golf Club. Nob North employee and University of Georgia student Ethan Goode is a renewing Yates Scholar, and Coosa Country Club's Megan Lovell is a graduating Yates Scholar at Berry College. Eric Simpson of Trion and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is a renewing recipient of a Moncrief Scholarship for potential course superintendents studying agronomy and turf management. There are 23 new and 45 renewing Yate Scholars -- chosen for academic achievement, financial need, character and golf work experience -- and seven Moncrief Scholars.
- Levi Nix and John Blevins won the 16-18 and 14-15 boys' age groups in the CDGA Junior Tour tournament Monday at WindStone Golf Club with 74s, but the best score of the day was Sport Allmond's 72 in the 12-13 division. Samantha Griffith had the best girls' score, 76, 10 strokes better than the next best.
Baseball
- Kevin Carr, a 2011 Silverdale Baptist Academy graduate, recently signed scholarship papers to continue his baseball career at Bryan College in Dayton. Carr had a pitching record of 8-1 with a 1.76 earned run average and 78 strikeouts in 55 innings as a Seahawks senior. He pitched five complete games. "We thank God for Kevin and his time here at SBA," Seahawks coach Jonathan Adcock said. "Bryan College has a strong baseball program and a great Christian environment that fits Kevin perfectly." Bryan coach Taylor Hasty agreed. "We are very excited to have Kevin as a member of our program," Hasty said. "When we look for young men, we look for men of integrity that come from solid school backgrounds. We believe that Kevin fits those qualities."
Auto Racing
- Chattanooga's Tod Hernandez got his third Limited Late Model win of the year at North Georgia Speedway this past Saturday night, but it was his first since April. Hernandez overtook Harrison's Bobby Mayse on the final lap for the victory, with Spencer Singleton of Dalton finishing third and Seth Wimpy of Morganton, Ga., and Devin Dilbeck of Copperhill completing the top five. Jeff Smith of Villanow held off Craig Burrows for his second area Crate Late Model win in as many nights, having won Friday at Boyd's. The Chatsworth track is holding a Thursday night special this week for Limited and Crate cars, paying $1,200 to the winner.
