Cleveland Fire Chief Chuck Atchley is retiring Nov. 1, and the Cleveland City Council accepted his resignation Monday.

Mayor Tom Rowland said a resolution Aug. 22 will commend Atchley for his service to the city.

In his letter, Atchley noted he will have served the city for 30 years. He has been chief since Feb. 6, 2006.

"We faced many challenges and found the means to achieve success and overcome obstacles," Atchley said in his letter. "I am saddened to leave such a great department, but I am excited about exploring other opportunities in life."
