Updated: One man dead, father hospitalized in Fort Payne

A man killed himself Tuesday night in Fort Payne after shooting his father, authorities say.

About 9:20 p.m., a call came in about a suicidal person at a house on County Road 622 and, as deputies were en route, a second call reported that a man had been shot, said DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

Authorities believe James Earl Ray, 52, was shot by his son Jonathan David Ray, 24, after the father called 911, Harris said.

Jonathan Ray then fled the home and authorities pursued him on foot and by helicopter, Harris said, but he was found dead behind a neighboring house.

He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Harris said.

James Ray was taken to a Huntsville hospital where he was treated and released, Harris said.
