The man slain during a home invasion Saturday died of a single gunshot wound, according to a Hamilton County medical examiner's report released this week.

Charles McCaine, 25, was shot at his home at 2508 Latta St. about 1:30 a.m., according to police reports.

One of three gunmen fired the round while he was lying face-down on the floor, reports show. He was taken to Erlanger hospital, where he died during surgery.

McCaine had a lengthy arrest record including charges of burglary, theft, vandalism and domestic assault, according to court records.

His family declined to comment when contacted at their home Wednesday morning.

A neighbor who declined to give her name said a woman from the McCaine house ran to her home after the shooting and banged on the door.

"She said the guys took her phone and she wanted to use the phone," the resident said. "I didn't even know her. They hadn't been there that long."

She said she didn't hear the single shot on the dead-end street.

A statement from police did not include a description of the suspects.

McCaine's death marks the 17th homicide this year in Chattanooga.
