Former Vol Williams transferring to Ball State

KNOXVILLE - Toney WIlliams will transfer to Ball State, the former University of Tennessee running back and Chattanooga native told the Times Free Press on the Thursday afternoon.

"I knew a little bit about the football program, and I got a chance to look at the communications program," Williams said. "When I went to visit, it just clicked and I felt like it would be a comfortable place for me to go and continue my career on the field and off the field."

Williams, who ran for just 11 yards on five carries with the Volunteers last season as a redshirt freshman, won't be eligible to play this season per NCAA transfer rules. He was a spring practice surprise after enrolling early in 2009, but a torn ACL and continual nagging injuries derailed the promising start to his UT career.

"[My UT career] didn't go the way I wanted to, but it went in a lot of ways the way I did want it to," Williams said. "I got to grow as a person and as a man, so I'm not going to look back at it as nothing bad because I respecting the decisions that the coaches made and myself made. I'm just ready to move on with my life and better myself."
