KNOXVILLE - The University of Tennessee football team has its third and final big scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium, and both the offense and the defense came through at different times.

The Volunteer's first team offense turned in 11- and 16-play scoring drives during the normal part of the scrimmage, but the defense stopped the offense in a pair of two-minute drills later in the scrimmage. Typically the third scrimmage focuses on situational work, but the Vols incorporated some normal scrimmaging on Saturday.

"We made a lot of progress," coach Derek Dooley said. "I think the guys were focused and ready to go and treated things seriously as they should have. I was pleased it that. We ran the ball a lot better in the regular scrimmage.

"It was about 107 plays overall. We still have a long way to go, especially in the situational part of the game. That's what I'm most concerned about it. It seems to take us a little while to process what's happening. I think that's a sign of youth, but I think we're making progress. Our legs are heavy as they should be, recovery is on the way, but it's not here yet. It was a good day."

Quarterback Tyler Bray led the offense to a Michael Palardy 37-yard field goal and tossed a 5-yard score to freshman wideout Vincent Dallas in the regular scrimmage. Tailbacks Marlin Lane and Tauren Poole combined for 77 yards on 20 carries, and Lane scored a 2-yard touchdown.

Odds and ends

Anthony Anderson, who practiced at receiver for the first time on Friday after moving from cornerback, made a one-handed touchdown catch on a pass from Calhoun native Nash Nance.

Tailback/receiver Defensive lineman Malik Jackson, Rajion Neal, tailback Tom Smith and linebacker Greg King all missed the scrimmage with knee injuries.

Dooley said that Prentiss Waggner has settled in at cornerback and been the Vols' most consistent player at the position. Waggner played both corner and safety last season and returned three interceptions for scores. Justin Coleman and Marsalis Teague are battling for the other position.
