Collegedale officer reprimanded for “display of affection” with wife in patrol car

A Collegedale police officer has been cleared of allegations that he was having sex in public after an internal affairs report determined he was kissing his wife.

The investigation was opened after Chattanooga police officers reported finding Cpl. Matt Spears and a woman having sex in the back of a sport utility vehicle in the parking lot of the Samaritan Center.

According to Collegedale City Manager Ted Rogers, Spears was with his wife in a vehicle after he got off duty. He was still in uniform, and his marked patrol car was parked beside the SUV.

“There was a display of affection between the two but no nudity was involved or anything other than kissing that would have been visible to anyone around,” Rogers said.

But because the two were in a public parking lot and it was late at night, Rogers said Spears “should have used better judgment in this situation.”

“We’ve had a very stern talk with him,” Rogers said Monday.

Rogers said no additional discipline would be leveled against Spears.

Granted, cops can do some pretty bad things sometimes. But an internal affairs investigation for kissing your wife in public? Really? The guy joined the police force, not the Catholic Priesthood.

CBIKAS, this wasn't an investigation about a cop kissing his wife in public. Two other Chattanooga Police officers reported that this officer was seen inside of an SUV with a topless woman on top of him having sex. A little different. How this can go from a naked woman and sex to now a kiss is beyond crazy. The Chattanooga officers must be blind or something. How does this affect their credibility on the DUI case they were there investigating? What did they really observe that night?

Haven't you noticed? The rules always change when it's one of their own. A case of a cop involved in statuatory rape suddenly become consensual. Charged with domestic violence? No problem. Cop was just in a bad relationship.

lookinfour,

That is a pretty big jump. Didn't know that part. Appreciate it. Was it really the guy's wife? I'm confused.

So the Chattanooga police don't have anything better to do than report a fellow officer for kissing his wife in HER OWN CAR, not a patrol car as the headline of this story says. Excuse me, but isn't this the city that is asking for federal and state help because of all the shootings and killings going on? I believe the Chattanooga cops are the ones who need to be reprimanded. GET BACK TO WORK AND DO THE JOB YOU'RE BEING PAID TO DO, YOU JERKS!

dl this isn't a non-issue for the general public, why would it be for a police corporal. You have to know that had this been the general public they would have been pulled from their car, read the riot act, and humiliated. The same thing that is happening to this guy.

A guy was arrested at Chester Frost Park last year for sitting in his car nude reading the newspaper. I would hope this cop gets at least the same punishment as that guy got.

On the other hand, maybe the guy was just being a good Samaritan.

The police didn't file the report. Possibly the lady they arrested on a drunken charge brought the subject to light as payback. The police only answered truthfully when asked. The police, at the time, had no idea the woman was the officers' wife. Even so, there's a public indency problem here which would have gotten the average citizen arrested or a summons to court, wife or girlfriend. Remember, the Chattanooga cops stated they saw what appeared to be a half naked topless woman on top of the officer. Collegedale police must like this one since they're trying to downplay and totally ignore the half-naked-topless-woman-on-top-of-the-cop part. ;-)

All I can say is, at least this was his wife. Usually, that's not the case. %)

Somebody's credibility should be questioned here. Who is doing the lying?

Does Spears work so far away that his wife has to meet up with him a parking lot to get a little action? Wait...didn't the article say that he was off duty?

I just want to know...if it were anyone else...average Joe, teenagers, etc...doing the same, would they have been told to move along...

I thought that the "nightstick in its holster" comment was amusing. And all I hear are crickets.

I agree with SavartiTN. The whole truth isn't being told here and the details of this midnight rendezvous are very sketchy.

First, the officers that initially came upon the police cruiser and SUV must have peeked into the SUV if they felt this situation was the least bit suspicious. Yet now they are retracting what they thought they saw. No longer do they believe they saw what appeared to be a topless woman straddling another person, but no, must have just been two people sitting next to each other in an SUV kissing. I guess I could see how you could confuse the two...Second, I know people do strange things but we're supposed to believe that this Collegedale officer is just off duty, driving home after midnight and supposedly meets up with his wife in a random parking lot to have a make-out session? Must be a Seventh-Day Adventist thing. Also, this guy has kids. Where were they? Sorry but things just aren't adding up here.
