Dr. Jack McEwen

Friday, January 1, 1904

Chattanooga has lost one of its most prominent and lively pastors and one of our community's most outstanding civic leaders with the death Monday of Dr. Jack McEwen, a former pastor of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.

Few Chattanoogans have spoken so many times, and so inspiringly, to local church congregations, civic clubs and other prominent gatherings as McEwen. On each occasion, his presentation was engaging, unique and constructive.

McEwen, whose death came at age 84, served as pastor of First Baptist Church from 1973 to 1980.

He was much sought after as an inspirational speaker, and he combined the Christian gospel with history and colorful commentary.

McEwen was quick of wit and always eager to promote good will.

In addition to his service at First Baptist Church, he became a popular professor of psychology at Chattanooga State Community College. He also served at Chattanooga State in administrative leadership.

McEwen was an effective and admired president of the Chattanooga Rotary Club as well.

He also served the whole area as a successful campaign chairman of the local United Way in 1994. He was involved, too, in many other civic endeavors for our community, which he dearly loved.

McEwen is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, June McEwen, who also has been an active and valued civic leader.

McEwen was always positive, enthusiastic and vigorous in his professional life and in civic service. He will be warmly remembered as one of Chattanooga's most cheerful and justifiably well-thought-of citizens.
