One of the season's biggest Christmas concerts takes place tonight when the Roueche Chorale presents its annual Chattanooga Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols.

The nondenominational Christian choir, accompanied by an orchestra, will present the story of the birth of Jesus through Scripture and song beginning at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

"The program contains stirring Advent and Christmas music that tells the Gospel in a clear and unique way," said director Jeff Roueche. "The program will include congregational singing of traditional carols as well as sacred favorites."

Roueche said harpist Tiffany Envid will play for 20 minutes before the concert. Hampton Baxter will begin the service with the sounding of the shofar before the choir processes into the sanctuary.

Concert numbers will include "O Holy Night," "Christmas Lullaby," "For Unto Us a Child Is Born," "Majesty and Glory" and "Happy Birthday Jesus," which will be sung by 6-year-old Peyton Whitworth. Other soloists will be Sandy Vice, Ruth Gonter, John Neal, Nancy Dryden and John Dimerjian.
