Don't let tea party 'take country back'
I have received the 2012 Presidential Platform Survey from Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, identifying me (registration number 1017.10163365) as "The Designated Representative of Voters residing in my district" (all-caps in the original). It reads "After compiling and modeling demographic information for the thousands of activists in our database, you were selected ..."
My head is spinning.
Coming just a few weeks after a wonderful letter from Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a leader of the tea party movement, and almost simultaneously with an email from Sen. Bob Corker, I just have to say, guys, this is too much!
I was especially gratified by the "thank you" in advance for my "advice and generous support" of up to $500 ...
But as Rick Perry would say, Oops. I am not now and never have been a member of the Republican Party. So you know what you can do with "stop the creeping socialism" and "make Barack Obama a one-term president" and "repeal ObamaCare and make drastic cuts to federal spending." Don't you see, endless obstructionism is a strategy for losers.
The tea party wants to "take our country back." The rest of us want to move it forward.

Pro-lifers choose life over death
A recent writer to this newspaper was bemoaning what she perceives to be the fact that many pro-lifers appear simply to be pro-fetus. Wrong! All pro-lifers are simply pro-fetus. Pro-lifers are pro-choice. They simply choose life instead of death. The writer then wails over where is the health care for this person and the outrage for the abuses of others, etc.
Abortion isn't health care. It's murder. The people she is concerned about were all fetuses at one time and allowed to enter this world. The writer began her letter with, "I am thankful for those who work for all children after they are born." What about for those before they are born?
Social services are provided for everything under the sun in this country -- provided you are allowed to be a post-fetus, better known as someone allowed to be born.
I would imagine that pro-choicers are thankful that their mothers chose life. The ones who aren't thankful just spread that which they despise. I ask the same question: Where is the outrage?
City, businesses should aid museum
Kudos to the Times Free Press for publishing the almost half page article about our National Medal of Honor Museum on Dec. 17. Chattanooga is indeed fortunate to have this national treasure located here.
At one time the museum was in a location near downtown. It was forced to move due to a higher economic demand for its location. As a 501c3 tax-exempt organization, it depends on the good will of the community to exist. The staff is all volunteer. Fortunately, Northgate Mall stepped forward and provided the space that the museum now occupies.
The museum has enough memorabilia to fill a location several times the size of what it now occupies. The city built a large park with a water feature and carousel, and named it all after one of our local Medal of Honor recipients. However, not one penny has been provided to the museum, which is a natural to be located in or near the park.
Thankfully, the Johnson Group recently volunteered to help initiate a fund-raising campaign. It is time for other local businesses and the city to step forward and sponsor the expansion and relocation of the museum. The result will provide a great addition to the growing number of tourist destinations and attractions in our downtown.
Alexander deceives on pipeline jobs
Sen. Lamar Alexander is quoted in your article, "Obama wants payroll tax extended entire year" Dec. 18, as saying that the Keystone XL pipeline will create 100,000 new jobs. What Senator Alexander doesn't say is only 13,000 of them will be in the United States. See how Republicans mislead their constituents?
Go to the pipeline's web site. There is a section in it called "Pipeline News" that tells the reader than only 13,000 jobs will be available in the U.S., not the 100,000 that Sen. Alexander gives the impression there will be.
You're a naughty "good ole boy," Lamar. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for deceiving your constituents and raising people's expectations that way.
As the Rev. Al Sharpton would say, "Gotcha".

Just who is pro-communist?
Been hearing a lot of comments about Occupy Wall Street being pro-communist. Let's then stop and consider what one does to be pro anything. The main way to support a political-economic system is to do business with it. Just about every one of us does business with the Chinese communists every week, most for quite a considerable amount of money. I'm pretty sure if we spent this much with the communists back during the McCarthy era, each one of us would be brought up before the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) and blacklisted. When did I do business with the filthy communist, you so indignantly ask? The last time you were in Walmart. Where does most of Walmart's merchandise come from? Yep, you guessed it. Many of the OWS protesters are aware of this and do not darken Walmart's doors. They demonstrate and try to educate America about where the country's jobs and wealth are being siphoned off to. The big corporations and the politicians that are in their pockets are getting a little uneasy about OWS bringing this dirty little secret to light. Well, it never really was a secret, was it? You just had to shut your mouth and open your eyes.

Vote conscience, but Paul's best
I have watched many of the debates so far and have summed up the candidates as follows: Santorum -- youthful enthusiasm but too hot-headed. Perry -- ain't got a clue. Will do as he's told. Romney -- used car salesman. Gingrich -- insider who doesn't act like one, very dangerous. Bachmann -- smiles way too dang much. Huntsman -- I feel dumber for having listened to him. Cain -- never mind. That leaves the only one up there who's a veteran, who doesn't participate in the Congress health care plan, who gets more donations from military personnel, who is the only one that speaks truth to power about war and the economy, etc. We must vote our conscience. If you honestly think that Romney or Gingrich is the best one, then cast that vote. But if you think that Ron Paul is the best one and then go vote for someone else because the media says so, call yourself something other than an American.
Officials' hard work makes area great
Everyone should read the article "Over Their Heads" in the Sunday, Dec. 18, Times Free Press, written by Mr. Justin P. Wilson, Tennessee Comptroller of Treasury. Wilson points out our financial shape here in Hamilton County.
Wilson was comparing Hamilton County with other counties, such as Jefferson County, Ala., where Birmingham is located and which recently defaulted on its debt. (In others words, they are bankrupt.)
So has Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania. Illinois is on the brink of financial collapse, and California is dangerously close.
Some of the most recent accomplishments by our Hamilton County team, consisting of County Mayor Jim Coppinger; County Commissioners Skillern, Fields, McClure, Mackey, Beck, Graham, Henry, Boyd, Bankston; and Louis Wright, administrator of finance, were balancing the budget for 2012, no tax increase, did not have to dip into the reserve fund, and maintained a AAA bond rating.
This permitted them to secure another $50 million for new school construction at a very low interest rate, saving the county another $3 million.
They continue to create jobs in Enterprise South Industrial Park.
We owe thanks to these officials for their many long hours of hard work, which has made Hamilton County the envy of many other locations to live and work.
