McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says Monday's fatal shooting of a theft suspect stemmed from a chop shop investigation launched back in July after officers at now-deceased Allan Shepherd's County Road 250 home spotted stolen property.

The deputies nabbed almost $250,000 worth of stolen items with a search warrant, but when officers on Monday came to the home to serve indictments charging Shepherd and his wife with theft, the man fled the home, fired at officers and was killed, according to authorities. The TBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Alan Shepherd's wife, Leah, was charged in the chop shop investigation and remains held at the McMinn County Justice Center, officials said.

Guy says he anticipates "a good report" from the TBI.
