ROME, Ga. - A man charged with murder in the Tuesday shooting death of his wife remained in an Atlanta hospital late Wednesday night, police said.

Officers are guarding 61-year-old Michael Woodrow Terry, said Sgt. Dan Bickers of the Floyd County Police Department.

Terry is accused of shooting at his wife, Juanita, 45, with a .22-caliber rifle Tuesday night, with one of those shots hitting her in the facial area and killing her.

"We know he fired three shots," Bickers said. "One of those shots was fatal."

Terry then turned the gun on himself, wounding himself in the face, Bickers said.

The shooting occurred in front of the couple's 13-year-old son in a camper next to the home at 1436 Livingston Road. The family was staying in the camper while the home was being remodeled, Bickers said.

The son called 911 and sought shelter at a neighbor's home. He is staying with family members.

Tuesday was not the first time police had been called to the Terry home.

Four years ago, police responded to a call from Michael Terry's girlfriend, who was not identified, after she said he abused her. Special Weapons and Tactics officers were called, and after a two-hour standoff Terry surrendered and was charged with battery and terroristic threats and acts, records show.

In addition to the current murder charge, Terry is charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and cruelty to children.

Juanita Terry's body was sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta, and an autopsy was done Wednesday, Deputy Coroner Ernie Studard said.
