Local IRS office open Saturday for tax filing assistance

Friday, February 4, 2011

The Internal Revenue Service office at 5740 Uptain Rd in Chattanooga will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday to provide free tax preparation and e-filing to taxpayers whose household income was $49,000 or less last year.

Five IRS offices in Tennessee which are normally open only on weekdays are opening Saturday to help people electronically file their 2010 returns.

"IRS workers will help all eligible taxpayers with their taxes but will focus on making sure that filers claim the Earned Income Tax Credit if they qualify," IRS spokesman Dan Boone said.

People who worked some or part of 2010 but did not make a lot of money may be eligible to receive as much as $5,666 by simply filing for the federal tax credit for low-income families.

Across Tennessee, volunteers also are staffing 180 free counseling sites, including 12 in Hamilton County. Taxpayers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 to find the closest free tax help site. A limited list of sites is also posted at www.IRS.gov.
