Birchwood family of 10 loses home to blaze

A family of 10 lost its home and possessions in a house fire this afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell said in a news release that a 911 call at 3 p.m. reported a fire at 5570 Johnson Road in the Birchwood area.

The Highway 58 department arrived to find flames coming through the roof.

Highway 58 Chief Charles Harris said no one was home when the fire broke out.

The homeowner, Cindy Leroy, had taken the family to the grocery store and got a call from her brother saying her house was on fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. Seventy-five percent of the house is destroyed and damages are listed about $70, 000. The American Red Cross will be assisting Ms. Leroy, another adult and eight children, Maxwell said.
