Meigs County High School baseball coach David Mason has been suspended over "allegations" about which officials so far have been tight-lipped.

"There's been some allegations and [it is] still under investigation, and he is suspended without pay until everything's complete," Principal Clint Baker said Monday.

Meigs Director of Schools Don Roberts said Monday afternoon that the investigation and suspension stem from a complaint filed by a parent.

"There was a complaint filed with my office against coach Mason and it was a complaint alleging improper conduct involving an 18-year-old student," Roberts said.

"The allegation goes against board policy," which is the basis of the suspension, Roberts said, but he was unsure when the investigation would be concluded.

Mason did not return calls requesting comment Monday.

Roberts and Baker said they knew of no criminal investigation, though Roberts said law enforcement was made aware of the allegations.

Meigs County Sheriff Jackie Melton and Decatur Police Chief Monty Rowland said their agencies were not conducting investigations related to the allegations against Mason.

Mason was entering his second season as baseball coach at Meigs County High, Roberts said.

"He came onboard as an employee in January 2010," he said. "He was a graduate of Lee University."

Roberts said Mason underwent the same background checks as all the system's employees. Roberts said he had recommended Mason for the job.
