Witnesses in a 1994 murder trial tried to recall events from nearly 16 years ago for lawyers in the second day of a hearing in which the defendant is seeking a new trial.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Schaarschmidt called Sgt. Steve Miller to the stand Thursday afternoon to question him about how he accidentally shot himself in the foot with the same rifle that just hours before had killed Lisa Kendrick.

Miller, a 37-year veteran of the Chattanooga Police Department, read along with Schaarschmidt through transcripts from the 1994 trial confirming that he did not have his hands near the trigger of the Remington 7400 .30-06 when the weapon fired, striking him in the left foot.

Edward Kendrick III was convicted of killing his wife, Lisa Kendrick, with the rifle. He has maintained that he was simply moving the rifle out of his car when it "went off" and a bullet struck Lisa Kendrick in the chest, killing her.

The most recent hearing began Monday and continued Thursday. Kendrick is challenging appellate court rulings on his previous appeals and seeking a new trial based on multiple allegations some of which include ineffective counsel.
