Renowned violinist in recital Sunday

The UTC Music Department will present a rare public performance of Jascha Heifetz protégé violin soloist Sooyoung Yoon at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center at Vine and Palmetto streets.

Yoon began playing the violin at 9 in his native Seoul, South Korea. At 16, he won the National Violin Competition of Korea and a few years later was awarded a Jascha Heifetz Scholarship to attend master class with the legendary violinist. He subsequently was invited to study with Heifetz at the University of Southern California.

Yoon's international career includes stints as concertmaster and soloist for the Long Beach and Santa Barbara symphonies and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Between 1986 and 1995, he led the Korean Broadcasting System Symphony in Seoul.

Sunday, he will be accompanied by pianist EunSook Lee, a professor at the College of Fine Art and Music at Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea.

They will perform Mozart's Sonata in G Major KV 301 and Beethoven's Sonata No. 5 (Spring) in F Major Op. 24, Bach's Partita No. 2 in D minor and Chaconne; Original Theme and Variations Op. 15 by Henri Wieniawski.
