Baseball Cougars sweep, rise to 6-5

ATHENS, Tenn. -- Cameron Brewster was 2-for-3 in each game with two runs scored in the first one and two RBIs in the second as Cleveland State defeated the Tennesse Wesleyan junior varsity baseball team 6-4 and 11-1 on Tuesday. Colin Sullivan drove in five in the two wins for the Cougars (6-5), including the deciding runs in game one. Jaime Harper had a pinch-hit two-run single in the first game, when Landon Snyder (1-0) gave up two earned runs in six innings and Alex Moore got the save. Hunter Hammond (1-0) allowed only an unearned run and four hits in five innings in game two, when Brandon Rader was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs and Cody Commons was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs.

* MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- Travis Blackburn was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Madison Moss was 2-for-4 with two runs as Berry College edged Covenant 5-4 in baseball Tuesday. For the Scots (4-1), Jonathan Carter was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Luke Furuto was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

* MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Myles Cordell's three homers and nine RBIs led Maryville to a 15-4 rout of Sewanee in NCAA Division III baseball Tuesday. Taylor Irwin had three RBIs and Alan Komorowski was 2-for-4 for Sewanee (0-3).

Softball

* DAYTON, Tenn. -- The NAIA's seventh-ranked softball team, Lee University, christened Bryan's campus field by winning 10-3 and 8-0 Tuesday against the Lady Lions. Brittany Balough and Caitlin Beshears each allowed three hits in getting the pitching wins, and Ana Coscorrosa was 7-for-7 for the day with two RBIs and two runs scored in each game for Lee (6-2). Charlie Wooden was 2-for-3 in each game, with a home run in the opener, and totaled five RBIs, while Hernanza Ruiz was 4-for-7 with four RBIs and Taylor Horseman was 4-for-7 with four runs. Tabitha Farrow was 2-for-4 in the first game for Lee (6-2), and Kaitlyn Grosch was 3-for-4 and scored twice in game two, when Danielle Balough was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bryan's first-year team (0-15) actually led after the day's first inning, 3-1, helped by two unearned runs. Brooklyn Jenkins was 2-for-4 and she and Courtney Combs each had an RBI hit in that inning.

* WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Tennessee Wesleyan softball team slipped to 0-3 with a 4-2 loss Tuesday at the University of the Cumberlands but then erupted for a 14-7 win in the second game of the NAIA doubleheader. Staci Nelson was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for TWC in the first game, when losing pitcher Kayla Kerns fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but gave up only four hits. Ashley Bryson homered, singled, stole two bases and drove in four runs in the second game, when Chealsey Baxter was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Lindsey Arndts had two hits and three RBIs and Brooke Ward, Brandi Lasley and Nelson each scored three runs.

* LAS VEGAS -- Former GPS standouts Tori Lewis and Whitney Hammond scored three of Tennessee's runs as the eighth-ranked Lady Vols whipped Southern Utah 10-1 in five innings Tuesday. Lewis started in right field and was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs, and Hammond scored as a pinch runner and stayed in the game in left field.

* Freshman pitcher Jessie Forrester from Ridgeland High School pitched the final four innings, allowing one hit and no runs, in Carson-Newman College's come-from-behind 8-7 softball win Monday at North Greenville. She then allowed only three hits in seven innings in game two, but North Greenville matched the Lady Eagles' two-run seventh inning with a tying flurry and won 3-2 in the eighth with a run off Mary Shealy. Leah Price from Rhea County had a two-run double in the loss after hitting an RBI single in game one. Ridgeland's Caitlyn Lance and Ooltewah's Bri Shoemake each had two hits and scored a run in the first game for Carson-Newman (7-6-1), Shoemake with an RBI, and Sara Kelley from Ooltewah was 1-for-2 and scored a run. Lance was 1-for-1 with a score in game two.

Golf

* VASS, N.C. -- Hixson residents Nick Carden and Richard Powell tied for eighth place with 36-hole 156 totals in helping the King College men's golf team finish second Tuesday to Belmont Abbey in the St. Andrews Presbyterian University Spring Invitational at Woodlake Resort.

Volleyball

* The Choo Choo City Volleyball Club hosted more than 100 teams from throughout the Southeast in a one-day tournament Saturday, and three Choo Choo City teams won their age groups: 17Black in the 18 Power division, 13Black and 12Black. Four other teams from the host club were runners-up.
