City cops to park cars Thursday

Any Chattanooga police officers who chose not to pay for take-home cars must park their cars Thursday, city officials said today.

Paul Page, the city's director of general services, said the cars will be stowed on three different lots - one on Amnicola Highway, a lot on 11th Street behind the old Farmer's Market and a lot on Main Street.

He said the city is in the process of putting fencing and cameras at the 11th Street and Main Street locations.

Mayor Ron Littlefield announced a month ago that any police officer who lives within the city would pay 20 cents a mile back and forth from work and those outside the city would pay 30 cents a mile if they chose to keep their take-home car.

The city has estimated there are about 360 take-home cars and 250 officers have opted to park their cars instead of paying the mileage.

Page said there would be more than adequate space to park the vehicles.
