CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Cleveland city school system has narrowed the field in its search for a new director of schools.

The school board reviewed five applicants today during a lunchtime meeting. The packets were prepared by the Tennessee School Boards Association.

The finalists are: Damon Cathey, assistant superintendent of Kingsport City Schools; David Roper, assistant professor of education at Middle Tennessee State University and former director of assessment for the Tennessee Department of Education; Nancy Zambito, superintendent of the Jackson-Madison [Tenn.] County School System; Martin Ringstaff, director of personnel and support services for Bristol [Va.,] Public Schools; and Clifford Davis Jr., principal at South-Doyle High School [Knox County Schools] and adjunct professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The board will hold interviews Feb. 14 through 18 en route to replacing current director Rick Denning, who leaves the job in June after 16 years.
