New farmers market opens today in Athens, Tenn.

Area farmers will begin selling produce today at the new farmers market in Market Park on South Jackson Street in Athens.

“I am very pleased that we were able to complete the pavilion portion of the park in time for the peak growing season,” said Austin Fesmire, director of parks and recreation.

Hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Stall space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no charge to sellers, but they must register at the UT Agricultural Extension Service, 107 W. College St.

The grand opening of the pavilion will be at 5:30 July 14 in conjunction with the Pick Tennessee Products 25th anniversary media tour.

Great way for us to support McMinn County farmers and purchase fresh locally grown produce. Reminds me of the good old days.
