State Rep. JoAnne Favors is calling for Hamilton County school board member Rhonda Thurman to step down over what Favors is calling Thurman’s “overtly racist” comments in the Sunday Times Free Press.

Favors spoke at a news conference at the schools central office, flanked by the black members of the school board and county commission and surrounded by other black leaders, teachers and community members.

She’s said she’s gotten an enormous number of calls from teachers, parents and others over Thurman’s assertions in the Sunday newspaper that suburban schools had been neglected while inner-city schools got extra resources.

In a front-page quote, Thurman said: “What do they want? I don’t think suburban students have been treated fairly. Poor people learn. Slaves learned to read. I don’t know why poor people can’t learn to read and write. I have a lot of poor people in my family, but they are still expected to learn.”

Favors said she and others would attend Thursday’s school board meeting to express their outrage.

Contacted immediately afterward, Thurman told WRCB reporter David Carroll that her future “is up to the voters in 2012.”

Where was Jo Ann Favors outrage when the School Board was voting themselves a back door pension for a parttime job? Where was her outrage when the school board gave a back door extension to Scales so as to thwart the will of the voters since they knew they were about to be cast out? Where was her outrage when a School Board member got caught stealing? Where is her outrage that Howard and Brainerd are the most crime ridden schools in the City with the lowest graduation rates? Where was her outrage when the inner city schools were saying that they were being treated unfairly? Seems like selective outrage to me. Rep. Favors, you are supposed to be representing all of your constiuents not just the ones who are the same color as you!

Thank you Rep. Favors for speaking out against this raving, ignorant lunatic. Your outrage is well placed and on-point. Chattanooga has come so far and does not need to be drug backwards by the likes of Ms. Thurman, Mr. Testerman, Mr. Galloway, Mr. Fairchild and Mr. Evatt. The public schools are for educating all children in Hamilton County - not for employing the friends of the school board.

I would like to see some actual numbers to back up all of these claims. Are they pumping more money into the urban schools at the expense of suburban schools? I do not send my children to our zoned school in the E. Brainerd area because I find it inadequate. It is absurd to pay city and county property taxes and not have a decent school in which to send your children. By the way, if you are "friends" with a certain principal in the E.Brainerd area you can attend out of zone even though they are considered "overcrowded". The rest of us have to follow the rules.

Ignorance is bliss, Libertarian4Freedom, and you exude a whole lot of blissfullness in your expressed thoughts on this page.Your attack on Rep. Favor's chosen fashion is far removed from the substance of her concern. "Slaves learned to read" was a fact for some of them and is not a racist commment in andf of itself. The tone and intent of the full passage was derogatory and sufficient enough to bring focus to Ms. Thurman's idea of worthwhile education for all. If you own a driveway, there is no need to sculp a place to park your vehicle. Providing resources for schools that have done without should not deliver disturbance to the efforts of the schools that must be temporarily frozen in staff and or resources. Children do not as to be born to a certain individual or a specific place. It is society's responsibility to develop all our young in to models that will someday become our leaders.

"slaves learned to read?" "Taking education for granted?"

Not only has Thurman shown her racism, but her ignorance as well. Is she saying that only white children know how to read? I've known quite a many illiterate people who can't read or figure. In fact, most black kids read quite well when compared to many fellow whites at or around the same age.

As for the quote "taking education for granted." As a board member, we can all guess Rhonda overlooked those stone white kids showing up for class most days.

Finally! A white official who doesn't cave in and apologize to overly sensitive blacks who are every bit the racists they accuse whites of being. Finally! You didn't do or say anything wrong Rhonda Thurman. You're the one being victimized by racists right now. Stand strong. White people and white tax payers deserve to have a voice too without being intimdated and pushed down by so-called "civil rights" people. Whites deserve civil rights too! Whites deserve freedom of speech too! Don't be intimidated by these bullies.

In essence you acknowledge mostly the entire Hamilton Cty commission is racist? Now we're on to something.

I'm not going to be hating on Rhonda. She's been heard on local black talk radio and basically making derogatory remarks in te past and the black host thanked her for "telling it like it is." With that, she must feel comfortable saying what she says. Can anyone imagine some black school board member going on a pred. white radio station talking about the stoned out white students that show up for class almost on a daily basis? They'd get their butts kicked off the show and run out of town most likely.

Truly, I don't care if Rep Favors wears a rubber nose, floppy shoes and parades around town on a unicycle. That would be her business. What I'm concerned with and in agreement with is that which fedup350 said "Rep. Favors, you are supposed to be representing all of your constiuents not just the ones who are the same color as you!"

As far as what Rhonda Thurman says, and in all fairness, just because a certain ethnicity is concentrated in a certain area, and those schools have been getting greater attention in funding and renovations, does not necessarily make her comments racially judgmental. If she feels that funds are being appropriated disproportionately, whether the sectors are concentrations of races or not, she, as a school board member, is within her right to speak her mind on the subject. If there is a poorer section of the population in a certain area, and there has been an abundant showering of funds in order to make improvements in structures and quality of learning, and that has not come to pass after a sufficient time, then she, or anyone else has a right to give their opinion on a comparative view concerning the rest of the school district. It's real easy to jump up and make this political fodder, but things aren't always as they appear, are they?

No one uttered a word. People like that smile and smile in your face, buttering up to you then they show their true colors. Rhonda and her like have taken what they've heard black folks say about one another, recycled it and now they're coming out full force, and showing their true disdain for you. That's what happens when you allow folks all up in your business. They study you and study you, then they pounce with a vegeance. Those who've tried to warn for years and years about the Rhondas out there were attacked for "living in the past." Well, the past can't be ignored. My parents went to Red Bank in the forties and fifties and I went there in the seventies and eighties. It was considered a good school and it was given a School of Excellence award. Red Bank is now half black. A couple of years ago, the school lost its Federal and State standing. It had to offer parents the option of having their kids bussed out of Red Bank to other schools, just so they could be assured of a decent education. All those decades, Red Bank was white and considered a school of excellence. Then it became half black and it became a Federal and state disgrace. Don't believe me? It's public information, easily investigated. What a shame that white kids have had their school brought to this condition. In order to "help" the blacks, the whites have to be harmed. I think this crap needs to stop. If black kids are so wonderfully educated, then let them prove it by lifting up their own schools instead of tearing down ours. Prove it! What HAS been proven and is verifible is the opposite.

lawstudent, according to your analysis there should certainly be no dumb white students out there who can't read. After all, whites got a running start for centuries.

Guess what? There are! Likely more so. The truth is, over the years, the educational system in America has dumbed down its children so much for whatever reason that many teachers are coming out of college not much smarter than the students. This tragedy has taken place pretty much all over America, and now we're just beginning to realize the end results.

The lesson once taught to many of us in 4th, 5th and 6th grades, many students aren't learning until 9th grade. Why? Why did America purposely slow down educating its children? Now, there's a TN Republican talking of keeping TN children in school even longer?

In fact, some of their classes are college level courses that they're getting college credit for. This is a vast improvement in education in the high schools today. I don't know what you're talking about, claiming America is dumbing down its students. But, all I can is, you must be a black person. What blacks got a "running start on" (to use your words), was blaming literally everybody else for their problems. No, ALL of America didn't come in and ruin Red Bank schools.

What is awful is that Ms. Favors didn't care about Thurman or anything she did until she said something deemed racist. Why didn't she care about the schools before then? She doesn't care until it gets her name out in the news and lets her score political points with her constituency. As far as Thurman goes I don't think anyone would say the schools have gotten better since she has been involved. Personally I don't think a hair dresser is qualified to tell a man with a Doctorate in Education how to run the school system.

Rhonda will not be intimidated by black racists like Favors and those other sorry public employees. The north end of the county is not "skeered" one bit. Jo Ann Favors has done more for Rhonda politically than can be estimated. Every time she opens her big mouth, Rhonda vote totals skyrocket. Rhonda should send her a thank you note.

Favors is playing to her base because her district is going to be eliminated and she is going to have to run against someone in a mixed district. Her claim to fame is that she got anti-dog legislation to keep pooches out of the capital because she saw a puppy and went nuts. What a statesperson!!

Her making fun of Rhonda's education and vocation was beneath contempt. She is a piece of crap just like the rest of the poverty pimps that were standing around her. Let's just look at a few of them and see what their vocations and educations are. Maybe they aren't qualified to hold office or comment on education either.

George Ricks - low level public employee who used to be on the Public Education Foundation Board with no better than a high school education I suspect from Ricks' grammar that he is secretly Chet123. (Maybe Selah is Jo Ann)

Jeffery Wilson - another ex-public employee (juvenile court) who is a house husband now.

Jo Ann Favors - a nurse with a specialty in bed pan emptying.

Warren Mackey - a highly educated teacher, usually able to discern right from wrong. Not in this case. He has white constituents and I bet they are not happy.

Greg Beck - another public employee with a cushy job at the city hall.

What in the heck have these people ever accomplished but lie their way into public office. I will take a business woman/hair dresser any day over these poverty pimps. Who are they to look down on anyone? Not to mention they are all public employees. Big Surprise.

Compared to what some of us have accomplished in life to this bunch, including Rhonda, is like comparing little league to the major leagues.

Not one business person in the bunch, every one of them a public employee that produces absolutely nothing. I have an advanced technical degree, several patents, and started my own multi-million dollar business 19 years ago and employ 15 people. I started with absolutely nothing. It would be very easy for many many people like me to look down their noses at that group of government ramora fish. I have worked hard but am no better than anyone. People in the north end who were my age grew up with a lot less than these kids get today and still were successful.

Rhonda, ignore these imbeciles. Now, let's all show up at the school board meeting to support the new majority.

I read and re-read Rhonda’s comments to try to make sense of what she meant. As usual, she stuck her foot in her big mouth. Not only is Rhonda out of control, but she clearly shows that she is being used as a tool and a fool by certain members of the dysfunctional school board and county commission. Rhonda fits right into the ‘snake’ category of politicians. That is, she is a back-stabber only out for her own gain and glory and will do whatever it takes to win.

Although a degree is not required to hold a political seat, there are certain characteristics that voters should expect from politicians. A few characteristics that come to mind are, 1) remain civil, professional, and respectful at all times, 2) have strong listening and communication skills, 3) have a tendency toward openness and communication, 4) encourage constructive criticism, 5) willing to acknowledge weaknesses in knowledge, and 6) have strong leadership characteristics. Ronda is definitely lacking in the above areas.

I can only speculate whether the Lyndhurst foundation would support her comments. I would think not, since their website states that the foundation ‘set new priorities, centered on the enhancement and enrichment of the natural, educational, cultural and urban environment of Chattanooga and the surrounding region’.

Rick Smith, as soon as you go against the grain, your days will be numbered. The best thing to do at this point is to begin negotiating your buy-out.

In light of what is happening in Atlanta right now, I think that Rhonda Thurman has a point. Anybody here ever been to Ooltewah High or Middle School? Both are so decrepit it is pathetic. From what I understand (and see), no money is being spent there.

I don't see it, Mrs. Favors. Not the racism from Rhonda Thurman, that is. Just the racism exuding from your own comments.

I met Rhonda Thurman once, at a Libertarian Party meeting a few years ago, and my impression is she can talk more intelligently than most of the posters here are writing--in a 6:05 post I counted at least 12 typos. And her photo shows she knows her day job.

"He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbor"--Proverbs 11:12a. "Can't we...get along" somewhat better than many of these posts show much effort at?

Instead of Scales or Smith, put we the people in charge: divide the available money by the number of students and let families put the money to whatever education they choose, including home or private or college or out-of-town or even the real world. Restaurants and cars keep improving under this kind of pressure. So would education.

Reading all these posts ia laughable. Pointing fingers back and forth will only continue the divide that Thurman started.

Let's consider some facts about Thurman that I have discovered over my years (also note that I was an inner city school teacher here in Chattanooga):

1. She sits on the public school board, yet all of her kids attended private school

(Chattanooga Christian). She is being allowed to make decisions for a school system she doesn't even allow her own children to attend. She doesn't represent Hamilton County's students, but her own agenda. 2. She was the main and sometimes only opposition to Jim Scales. She lobbied for this outcome since his arrival. Once again, for someone who is complaining about suburban schools not having adequate funding, she might have considered putting that buyout to better use. 3. And this final comment goes for ALL school board members: just because you are elected to a board does NOT make you qualified to make instructional decisions. If you allow us, the educators, to do our job, we wouldn't have a need for you. The red tape just gets tighter and thicker every time the school board gets involved where they have no right to be.

The level of mutual ignorant racism demonstrated in this talkback is unbelievably embarrassing. You all are the reason this city does not progress. It is shameful. This is one time the times free press should moderate comments.

aperez71 just like a liberal wanting to use censorship to stifle people who disagree. This is a commetary about race that JoAnne Favors started. She brought it up and your side has kept it up. It's ok with you that public employee poverty pimps run the city but an intelligent business woman/hair dresser can't, None of those guys standing with JoAnne Favors has a real job. What do they know?

When I moved back to Chattanooga a couple of years ago after being gone for two decades, my lifelong friend told me, "In Hamilton County, if you want your children to have a great education, put them in private school. A good education, put them in a Christian school. Don't care, put them in the public school.

Those words surprised me but, it turns out, she is right.

At best, the majority working for this school system are apathetic. They are not concerned with the students. They are concerned with pensions and benefits. It is a shame. I came out of this school system...decades ago...with a great education. That won't happen for many children in Hamilton County schools now.

I think that Thurman is frustrated. She sees what many of us see. And has the nerve to speak out. Does that make her wrong? I don't think so.

I noticed the last couple of days in Chattanooga news that certain racial groups are unhappy about a lot of things. Not happy about the shootings but not happy when the cops are being "racist" about targeting gang members. Not happy about Thurman saying the word "slaves" but quick to issue their own racial name calling.

And for the person who wondered if their were no white dumb people...there are. And they are sitting quietly not opening their mouths and not supporting a person with the guts to tell like it is. That wouldn't be "politically correct."

And, in case you were wondering about the statistics on achievement, broken down by race, I offer you this...from the Tennessee Department of Education... http://edu.reportcard.state.tn.us/pls/apex/f?p=200:20:3880256441101643::NO

"There are DAWGS in this PLAHZA! Nice one, Ms. Favors. Nice one.

Ams461 - Professional educators as you call them couldn't manage a flea circus. They might be able to teach, but planning, budget, and implementation they cannot do. Before you start talking down to the rest of us. Read my post about the wonderful group that was with JoAnne today. They are much less qualified than Rhonda to decide anything.

Let you do your job!! That is what we are discussing. Your bunch ruined the city system and then has been in charge for years and now everything sucks. Rhonda was one lone vote for years.

The election of the new board was only last year!!!! Any problems with have now were caused by you guys. The main reason we are talking about this is that you haven't done your job and now you want us to leave you alone.

Obviously you have never been in the private sector. When you screw up out here in the real world you don't still get your paycheck, cushy retirement and Cadillac health care. Forgive me if I don't cry for you.

Education need a strong management hand. There is no one in the country from the education field that could do a better job than just about any small businessman. Keep your arrogance to yourself.

Whatever one's opinion of Ms Favors, it doesn't detract from the truth of her words. Rhonda is so dense she still doesn't get why some black folks get upset when they are compared to slaves. How uppity of them! Instead of clarifying her comments today, Rhonda only reiterated them, once again comparing black ("and white") students to slaves and acting shocked that anyone would find offense to that. It would be like me saying, "Inbred rednecks learn to shut up so why can't Rhonda?"

Rhonda's comments were not only racist, she is also ignorant of history. Anyone caught teaching slaves to read back in the day was usually publicly whipped so the very few slaves who did learn to read had to do it on their own. Is this what Rhonda is suggesting for our schools? Flog the teachers publicly by offering them little support and no pay raises and let the kids go out and get educated on their own.

In Rhonda's world we wouldn't need money for the school system because there would be no school system. Everyone would be self-taught. But even Rhonda graduated from our public school system, not to mention the highly acclaimed Highland Beauty Academy where she mastered in perms with a minor in eyebrow waxing.

Ms Favors said it best, describing Rhonda: "It is the empty wagon that makes the most noise." Our students deserve better than Rhonda Thurman.

you libs on here bash rhonda thurman for being a college dropout and a hairdresser. well, i submit to you that rhonda thurman is far more articulate and intelligent than mr. scales..the man who slinked out of town with gobs of money and with nothing to show for his brilliance.

kamiletn.....according to your own post joanne favors doesn't meet those requirements. the truth hurts, doesn't it?

rhonda thurman doesn't mess around. she's not steeped in politics and doesn't try and sugar coat things. she points out the obvious.......which is that all the money in the world can't make up for the cruddy job public school teachers and administrators do.

it's moronic liberals like you that inject race into things. her point about slaves is an excellent one.

whenever libs are faced with reality and the facts they cry racism or pull out the class envy card.

great point l4f..great point. you can add abraham lincoln to that, as well.

rhonda thurman is exactly what would be needed in a school superintendent, if that post is even necessary. scales and all these other nimrods who behave as if they're the emporers of education are nothing but overpaid elitists. check out the fraud perpetrated in the atlanta schoools regarding test scores and cheating over the last 10 years. perfect example.

joanne favors is the racist. yes, blacks can be racists and bigots. i'm sick of hearing that they can't be. i call for joanne favors to step down for gross stupidy and cultivating a mob mentality. which is par for the course for the so-called "black leaders" in this country. "black leaders" who need to keep the race industry going so they can maintain power. shake down artists.

rhonda thurman is proven correct every day when dull, vacant, ignorant, illiterate and passionless "students" are promoted and graduate from public schools every year. it's a waste of life. unions, the democrat party and a liberal agenda are responsible....not poverty, not race, not racsim....just a whole bunch of incompetant and lousy educaTORS.

hey, libs...how's that great society working out for you? generations of poorly educated and dull individuals who have no interest in learning.

Just because you send your children to other schools does not mean you don't represent children that attend Hamilton Co. public schools. Most school systems indoctrinate the children, teaching them only what they want them to know. Also if you want religion in the classroom, you have to pay for it. I don't believe anything she said was racist, I think it's ignorant to assume otherwise. Some are just looking for a chance to pull the race card, especially politicians that want to benefit from the drama. Please! Slaves learned to read under the worst circumstances and almost no resources, the fact that inner-city schools are given more resources and cannot produce the same results is significant. I'm actually glad she brought it up, maybe more parent participation is needed if the schools arent' making any progress. I would say we need to focus on the parents more than anyone....teachers, the school system and resources only go so far. I honestly think that's all she was saying...what is the excuse for not learning? If slaves can do it, poor people in today's time can do it then there should be no excuse for current inner city students....by the way that includes white kids too. Point, Blank, Period.

Poor choice of words...maybe. "Overtly racists"...not in the least. Why does it become an issue anytime anyone mentions the word "slave" in anything. It makes me sick to think about what was suffered in the day of slavery. But to make it racist to use the word is just just ridiculous. I am not a Thurman fan. But in this situation I cannot see she meant any harm or disrespect.

July 7, 2011 at 11:42 a.m.

it's not even a poor choice of words...it illustrates her point well. it's only an issue because of the poltically correct boot on the neck of this country. a white person, the be more specific, a white conservative cannot use the words black, slave or race. only liberals, the liberal new media and black americans are allowed to.

the politically correct boot is so tight now.....the milwaukee police chief could not utter the term, race based attack, when describing the beating of a white couple at a 4th of july celebration by a bunch of black teens, even though...they made racially charge remarks to the couple and commented on how white girls bleed a lot.

the race industry, which people like favors promote and profit from, is perpetuating ignorance and anger in the black community. they would have you believe the same "white people" that were responsible for slavery are the same "white people" that are around now.

The ABSOLUTE worst teacher my oldest son had in elementry school was an eldery black teacher (who only had 2 yrs. to go til retirement) that was FORCED upon McBrien Elementry in 1969 or 1970... when I spoke to the teacher he got for the next year about my concerns re: his grades dropping from the previous year she said..."I know. I got many of those students and I will bring them back to where they should be. I just worry about the students that FAILED her class and have to repeat. Many of those parents are very upset with the school over this"

The biggest problem the blacks won't admit to is that THEY have contributrd to their OWN problems and blame everyone else for not succeeding...they stick their heads in sand like an ostrich or cover their ears singing so they can't hear a voice of reason..

no, sir. AMERICA has "contributrd" to the problems of poverty in the country, period. its just the media using the black americans as the face of poverty. however, if you want to stick to black Amercians, have you heard the history behind the Black Wall Street, Pres.
