Local black leaders including ministers, county commissioners and Board of Education members joined with state Rep. JoAnne Favors Wednesday, calling out a Hamilton County school board member for what they say are racist comments about poor children in inner-city schools.

Favors, D-Chattanooga, is calling for school board member Rhonda Thurman to resign and formally apologize for a statement published in Sunday’s Chattanooga Times Free Press. In the story, Thurman said inner-city schools get too much attention and money without much payoff. Her District 1 is in North Hamilton County, including Soddy-Daisy and Sale Creek.

“I don’t think suburban students have been treated fairly,” she said in the story. “Poor people learn. Slaves learned to read. I don’t know why poor people can’t learn to read and write. I have a lot of poor people in my family, but they are still expected to learn.”

Reaction to the comments was swift and loud, according to Favors. She said she has heard from people all over the state about what Thurman said. The Democratic lawmaker said Thurman’s comments were “disheartening” and showed that she is an ineffective board member.

“Many citizens in this community find it quite alarming that freshman school board members and some county commissioners are so heavily influenced by the least educated among them,” Favors said Wednesday during a news conference at the school system’s central office. “They must remember that an empty wagon makes the most noise.”

The school board’s two black members, George Ricks and Jeffrey Wilson, attended the news conference along with Warren Mackey and Gregory Beck, the two black Hamilton County commissioners.

Ricks said he agreed with Favors and believes Thurman’s comments were racist.

“When you have African-Americans getting moved from positions, that hurts,” Ricks said. “What are you supposed to think?”

Joe Rowe, first vice president of the NAACP, said he believes Thurman’s comments will hurt the community by making Chattanooga appear backward.

“Teachers and students and business people are concerned,” he said. “What if this had happened before Volkswagen had come in?”

Reached for comment after Favors’ news conference, Thurman refused to speak to the Times Free Press.

“They can read what I have to say somewhere else,” she said by telephone.

She told other media she won’t step down and that she said nothing wrong.

Some of her supporters on the school board said that, while they are concerned about her statement, Thurman isn’t a racist.

“Sometimes we speak without thinking,” said school board Chairman Mike Evatt.

On May 26, the school board voted 6-3 to buy out then-Superintendent Jim Scales’ contract, which will cost the county between $285,000 and $300,000.

Thurman was a longtime political opponent of Scales and has pushed hard to get a local person in the position.

In Sunday’s exclusive interview with the Times Free Press, Scales said Thurman and some Hamilton County commissioners became his political enemies because he wouldn’t hire their friends.

The school board named Deputy Superintendent Rick Smith as interim superintendent. He is expected to be appointed superintendent tonight after school board members changed their own rules to fast-track him into the position.

Favors said she and several others plan to attend the school board meeting tonight to watch the proceedings.

Board members Thurman, Everett Fairchild, David Testerman, Mike Evatt and Joe Galloway voted in favor of changing the board’s hiring policy last month. Under the new rules, they no longer must hold public interviews, conduct an outside search or wait more than 15 days before naming a new superintendent.

Galloway said he will vote to hire Smith, who he said is an excellent candidate with more than 20 years experience in local schools. Smith also will have a better rapport with county commissioners and possibly secure schools more money, Galloway said.

But he said supporting Smith doesn’t lump him in a voting bloc on the board with Thurman. He is “catching tons of flak” about supporting Smith, he said, but thinks it’s the right thing for students.

“I want to move forward with those inner-city kids,” said Galloway. “I don’t have an ax to grind.”

I don't see why they had to ban everyones comments. Mine was not lacking civility. I simply said both these women are an embarrassment to the community and don't care about anyone but themselves. Ms. Favors apparently doesn't mind Ms. Thurman wreaking havoc in the school system until she says something deemed racist. Then all of a sudden it is time to act. How about instead of worrying about getting a good soundbite for T.V. or getting your name in the paper Ms. Favors DO SOMETHING TO HELP THE SCHOOLS GET BETTER. But the point is she doesn't care about schools, or kids or even Thurman probably. She cares about herself and getting on t.v. or getting in the newspaper.

Ms. Thurman has not really done anything positive I have ever seen other than run her mouth for no one's benefit but her own. The school system certainly has not gotten any better since she got involved and she obviously has problems playing well with others. She needs to go too.

As a black man I really don't see what she was saying as racist. If you compare our inner city schools with the suburban schools, the facts will shoe you that 1) yes more money is spent on inner city schools, 2) inner city kids don't tend to learn and study as well, 3) the majority of inner city kids are black. Therefore...the facts show that our black children have more money spent on them than others yet they do not perform as well. That is not racist...that is based upon fact. Now, the whole slave thing could have been not spoken, but at that I don't think she was comparing black children to slaves. She was showing that even with the extreme depravity of slaves they were able to learn. These kids have it much better than they did but they cannot learn. I don't think her emphasis was on the skin color/slave aspect but rather on the amount of money spent on the respective groups' educations and their results. Again, the whole slave thing could have been restated in a better manner but her principle still rings true.

If it is true that more money is spent on inner city schools with less results, then perhaps it would be helpful to try to determine what can be done to improve the results. When I read Rhonda's comments, I get the impression that she wants to provide equal resources to both suburban and inner city schools and let the chips fall where they may. Sounds fair, but everyone knows that children of poverty need additional resources if they are to overcome their circumstances. We are seeing increased violence and gang related activity in the inner city. We can simply abandon these kids and blame their parents, or we can attempt to address the root causes. I believe it will be cheaper in the long run to invest in these kids education. Schools are much less expensive than jails. Rhonda may not be racist, but she is ignorant and short sighted. Those are commom characteristics of a racist, so it is easy to get confused.

THE SURVIVAL OF THE INDEPENDENT MIND (Taken from Einstein: God Religion & Science by Carl A. Patton)

Greetings Brethren,

Peace be unto you. This day I thought about John and the days he lived. I also felt the presence of David, Isaiah, Jeremiah and all the great Prophets. Jesus was divine and stood alone but other men in the flesh did have many temptations.

Again I also heard Einstein as a contemporary man who live and died independent. As he immersed himself in thought he leaned on no man. But who are the people that live and die in independence of thought and mind? Do they have to be spiritual to see these things?

There Are Thinkers & There Are Non-Thinkers

Finding peace in solitude and thought I started out on some conclusions on questions as to who are the thinkers?

But are those that think all independent of thought, deed and action? Do you have to think to do anything?

I shake at the notion that the unwise are independent of thought. Then are only wise people independent thinkers?

Do you have to know God to be an independent thinker? Can you know God and don’t know that you touch,

The spiritual realm? Are the greatest thinkers living and some that have made the transition? What is independence of the,

Heart, the mind and thought? I then turned back the pages of time. Man could defeat fatigue and the hazards of today’s technology,

By harvesting his own crops. He could also fish. Rest assured that those so wise in temporal pleasures will never feed the,

Intellect that has no bounds and rides end- lessly not listening to the norm. But forever feeling the rain and basking in the sun-shine.

First I also Thank BlueDagger for his comments. There are other factors that are making it difficult for children in the inner city schools to learn. Ms.Thurman might have used a poor choice of words but I don't feel they were meant in a negative way. It seems to me that Mrs. Favors comments are more politically motivated than TRUE concern. If she is so concerned with fighting racism she could address the loud and blaring music I hear coming from autos in the inner city using all manner of racist terms. Ms.Thurman's beef is not with the color of the students skin but with the amount of money being spent there with little results for that expenditure.

I understand matters outside school's doors are out of the school system's control. Neighborhoods differ. What I cannot wrap my head around is the varying levels of instruction that is available within those doors. As an employee of the system, all teachers and other personnel should, first, give their best and give it at whatever location they are assigned. As with other jobs, one works where one is allocated. Emphasis should be placed on strengths of staff in order to place it in locations where talents are maximized. If a Brown acadamy staff member would be greater valued at Normal Park, so be it. Part of the budget should pay attention to this type assignment specialist, but not abused and confused with staff's own ideas of placement. I have never received or seen a check as an educator in Chattanooga but I believe they read, Hamilton Couty Schools not Howard or Ooltewah etc. With better placement, many needs of a school might be filled without inflated budget requirements. As to those requirements, treat them just as one might their child. On an as need basis with occasional perks for all.

I don't care what color a person is. We are all God's children and should treat each other as such. Every time somebody doesn't like what someone says they hold a press conference complaining about what so and so said. Instead of complaining, why can't we all just pull together and fix whatever is wrong? No more black against white and white against black....just human beings working together.

“Sometimes we speak without thinking,” said school board Chairman Mike Evatt.

Well, you have to have some significant amount of grey matter, or desire to use it for its purpose, to speak intelligently.

The bottom line is the people of Thurman's ilk on our school board are a reflection on the electorate. To many of us who have moved here over the years from places in the south that have grown up and put the racism of our predecessors behind us, the school board is a mortifying mess, a blight on the community and a tragic reflection of the electorate's values.

Any one with just a little motivation to look into the issues with an unbiased eye sees that the problem with inner cities is one of racism. The struggle of racism for many reasons has turned predominately into an economic struggle and one of overall bias against the poor. The place where the economic struggle is bad is the inner city.

One can say its motivation, lack of family values, economics and argue all day to no good purpose; but it is all wrapped together. Go downtown and work with one of the homeless or neighborhood shelters and meet some of the people who are struggling to change their station. A person who is released from jail has almost a zero chance of getting a job in this town. What do you expect them to do?

You will have your eyes opened and find it is hard to loathe someone you find is a real person with hopes and aspirations jut as you have but who is trapped in a morass of barriers. Solve the economic problem (goes for the meth dealers and users and the good old boys out in the valley also) and you'll take a big step towards solving the family problem and then the school problem.

No town that takes its citizen's seriously needs people like Thurman serving (sic) the public good. They only make a bad problem much worse.

When Jesus said "the poor will always be with us," he was using irony to bemoan our thickheaded selfishness, not justifying us to ignore the disadvantaged.

Thank you bluedagger for seeing the reality of it all. It is amazing how we are supposed to be a community and do what is best for the KIDS but some still want to make sure that the differences are known. I agree that Mrs. Thurman should have chosen her words better but it is still the truth - why not see that. I believe that Mrs. Thurman should keep her position - I'm sure that there have been comments made by others that she may think were racist against her but no one brings that up.

I stand corrected on my premise in this matter. Just leaving a website that distinguishes boundaries as it applies to school board members, I have greater undertsanding of Thurman's charge on this issue. She is a representative of the suburban schools she fights for and to the regard, job well done. What she misses is that while she is charged to those specific schools, she also sits with a board whose prurpose is the better good of an entire district. This means having board members who will tyend to regional concerns as they work as a unit for the entire terrritory. When one is elected to this board it must come with the understanding that that parts mae the whole. Ms. Thurman, you are district 1's representative on the Hamilton Copunty School Board. To exact your ideals calls for separation of your district to an independent entity. Your fight is better appreciated by me with this information in hand but your means and methods are repugnant.

Oh, how I miss the once daily cat fights between Reps. Tommie Browne and Brenda Turner. The sum of their IQs barely approached room temperature. If Brenda said the sun would rise in the east, Tommie would claim the contrary. They provided the legislature the comic relief of a Rowan and Martin or a Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. As our community faces economic uncertainties, challenges in school system, daily violence among urban youth, etc. our prayer for that same comic relief has been answered. Thank you God for sending us Rhonda and JoAnne. While the rest of us try to solve what appear to be intractable problems, you have provided us with a laugh track.

While Ms. Thurman’s comparison was controversial, it was accurate, yet taken out of the context of the discussion by Ms. Favors. In no way was Ms. Thurman calling for the restoration of slavery or asserting that the residents in our inner city should be viewed as slaves. Neither was she belittling those slaves who were enterprising enough to fight through their circumstances and obtain an education; quite the contrary, actually. Her complaint is simply one of investment vs. return. While there is no doubt that there are many in our inner city who are struggling to get along, it would be truly ignorant for them to claim that their circumstances are worse than those of slaves. Slaves who had a desire for education found ways to study and to gain what they desired, without any investment from outsiders. Today, our inner city schools are receiving additional funding, yet many of the students are not performing. The truth of the matter is simple: more budgeted money will not increase a student’s passion for learning. More budgeted money will not increase a parent’s willingness to work with his/her child. If these children and their parents truly want to get out of the circumstances in which they currently reside, there needs to be a restoration of the passion of those strong enterprising slaves. Take advantage of and maximize the benefit of all resources you come in contact with that grant you an education. Until parents and children alike long for real change and take advantage of the educational opportunities that they’ve already been given, no amount of additional money matters. By definition, money spent with no resulting benefit is loss. Please inner city students, dive into your educations. Decide that an education is important to you and worth investing your time and focus on. At that point, this discussion becomes obsolete and you will control your own future. You owe that to yourselves and you deserve it!

Thank you bluedagger for being intelligent.

Thank you inquiringmind for proving that no matter what the situation, or what the actual reason for the situation, there will always be people like you who say it is racially motivated just because you have no other leg to stand on.

I don't even think Rhonda could have chosen better words. What better way to make the point that no matter what situation you are in, YOU and ONLY YOU can make it better by bettering yourself, than using the way slaves bettered themselves. She was praising black people who were born slaves but worked to overcome it.

And saying that the only problem in those inner city schools is racism is just ignorant. How can that be the only problem, when most the teachers there (white or black) give their students (white or black) as many opportunities as possible to pass a simple test, make up work, do credit recovery, and so on... and all that happens is they get cussed at or pushed by the student, yelled at by parents who think their kid is always right no matter how many times they've been suspended or arrested, and pretty much just beaten up (not literally) for trying to help? That's racism? Really?

For a newspaper who crows about wanting free speech and transparency you guys are hypocrites. Sometimes civility is in the eye of the beholder. I bet the British thought we weren't very civil either.

If you are going to let someone like Favors assassinate Rhonda's character we are justifiably mad. Maybe you should be fair and these comments wouldn't be on the blog. I also noticed you took out some of Jo Anne Favors nasty comments too. It is not your job to be the information monitor. Just report. You remind me of the 15Th century popes that thought that you had to go through them to get to God. Ruth Holmberg doesn't own your paper anymore.

Maybe we should have a Support Rhonda rally and advocate ending our TFP subscriptions.

Go ahead and censor me. Maybe I might just buy $20,000 worth of time on radio and TV to make my point.

IF YOU WERE REALLY FAIR YOU WOULD GIVE RHONDA AN OP-ED TO GIVE HER SIDE. DO THE RIGHT THING.

We live in the illusion that throwing more money at schools no matter where they are located or what color(or no color)people who attend will automatically make the schools and communities better. That is not the case. While having more funding supports new and varied programs, said programs have not always been proven to help. Yet we keep throwing more money and elected officials promise more if re-elected. So there is a deeper issue going on. Mrs. Thurman did not use wise judgment even in stating the truth she spoke. As a result, she has to face the music on that. As for it being exploited and blown out of proportion for any reason, that just underscores a division in our community and in the nation. Racism will not be totally corrected no matter what laws we pass. That is most sad and we all need to continue to do all we can to fight it. But to bring it up when the real issue is what is best for all students in Hamilton County, is even sadder. Mrs. Thurman opened herself up to this response. Now who knows what the outcome will be? What I wish to see is something of substance proving that either woman really cares about all the students in our area. The inflamed speech I am seeing does not reflect that.

I feel that the cost of ousting the old superintendent is understated. The cost of removing him may be $300K, but the cost of installing the arbitrarily appointed replacement includes that annual salary. Add this to the salary spent on the old superintendent thus far. To me, this is a political appointment fiasco costing nearly half a million dollars.

$100K + $300K + $100K = $500K.

It won't work out perfectly that way, but my gut feeling is that it'll be somewhere near that. Maybe the salaries will be higher. Maybe the time frame will be shorter on the changeover. Maybe there will be some odd fees to lawyers or some other required something. It's more than the $300K to remove the old superintendent.

It works out like this because budgets rarely provide advance financing for contingencies. This changeover could have been made more smoothly, with budget support, if the voters had genuinely wanted it. Instead, we don't see that.

One of the trends in these arbitrary self-appointments for political friends has been that it'll be implied that this is what the voters want, but there will be no hard evidence that it's what they want. No ballot initiatives.

We had one for fishing licenses, but we see none about making these big changes to government offices. Instead, we are expected to rely on the personal opinions or voicings of these people in office who will just remove one and install their friends.

That is, install their friends at handsome profit.

If it were happening at a reasonable salary, like about 10 to 20% of the costs actually involved, we probably wouldn't care as much. Yet, instead, look at these massive sums of taxpayer dollars that are getting awarded to cronies as we start gearing up for 2012 elections.

It's fundraising time. Republicans are helping themselves to the taxpayer coffers.

I don't know how much these superintendents make annually; but, the recent trend in these appointments and contract rewards since Mayor Coppinger's self-appointment has been to involve sums of no less than $100K.

We're losing half a million dollars as a result of another arbitrary political appointment. These are happening weekly. They're costing us about $120K+ at a time.

Not only were the remarks unprofessional, but the financing doesn't look remotely like what voters expect from elected officials. These government paychecks are not meant to be royalties.

One thing about this situation with Thurman is that it brought light to the increasing problems with the inner city schools and student (not all). Some students are performing below their grade levels. However, Ms. Thurman does not know how to communicate in an effective way w/o using racist comments. In her interview, she constantly spoke of race (black, white and hispanics) why?? The inner city has problems with teenagers not being able to find jobs for the summer, parents finding affordable summer programs for their children, and parents w/personal problems, etc. If this city really wants to help the inner city, they could bring back the "Work Corp", music program for the schools, etc.

My question to her would be this: What schools does your children attend? Are they in private schools? If they are in private schools, then Thurman has NO confidence in public schools system in Chattanooga. As representative of District 1, Ms. Thurman needs use more tact as a public figure.

They are doing their constituency no favors by ignoring the gloomy statistics that continually come their way. Leadership, not cover-up is needed but that may actually mean looking at reality. Not achieving, not adapting, not taking responsibility is contributing to a downward spiral. Time for change, too many opportunities and investments have been wasted.

"As a man thinketh in his or her heart, so is he/she." Let's look at the facts: 1. Where were our so-called bleak, I mean black leaders where a black man was shot over 40x??? 2. Where were our bleak I mean black leaders when they allowed $14 million funded for the Franklin Middle to left from da hood and ended up elsewhere. 3. Where are these leaders who call our kids thugs and gang-bangers themselves; are these leaders bringing any type of strategic plan to our community? 4. What about the that bldg. on MLK they had built for supposedly low-income families. That bldg has been vacanted for years at the expense of the black and white citizens. I could go on...it's sad where some of us who are black have a knee jerk re=action. This thing with the school board is a surface issue that goes way deeper that what is being address. The blacks who really care, it's past time for us to stop allow the "bleak leaders" to showcase the lack of planning. I am sure their intentions are noble and bias. But this is 2011 and we are still talking!!!!

Chet123, First, your caps lock was on. You push the button labeled "caps lock" to turn it off. You can thank me later.

Second, Bluedagger didn't say there were no successful people from the inner city, neither did Rhonda Thurman. Whatever bluedagger's color, he is right.

Third, the successful people you mentioned did not get pulled out of the inner city by Daddy Warbucks and given unlimited resources to finally have a chance to become successful. They worked hard and studied and ignored what the society they were surrounded by was trying to force upon them. They made a personal decision to break with the culture of failure currently being embraced by the inner city and decided to embrace a culture of success. An attitude change that helped them break the cycle of slavery they were enmeshed in and think and act for themselves instead of accepting the puppet strings of social welfare and dancing the dance of entitlement and regression. They threw off the insults of affirmative action and earned the merit they deserved. The true secret to their success was realizing they were responsible for their own lot in life and deciding their lot would be one of personal accountability.

I like Rhonda Thurman and believe she truly cares about the children. I think these "black leaders" are just race baiting. They are trying to keep the ugliness and stupidity of racism strong so they can continue to use it as a club to get their way or demonize people they don't like. It seems they could care less about the children or they would be doing more to try to change the ignorant culture of entitlement and do more to foster that culture of personal responsibility that made the USA great.

It's not your skin color that matters. It is who you are that makes you succeed or fail. It upsets me to think of the uncountable geniuses lost to the culture of entitlement. Who could they have been if they had been inspired or taught that what they are does not depend upon their environment, but upon what they want to be. That answer is and has always been, "You are what you make of yourself".

I don't agree with what Ms. Thurmond said. Black children in inner-city schools are doing exceptionally well, when they're learning is not being sabotaged by overt and covert racist and racism. I have a neighbor whose child attended an inner-city public school they place the child in a private school, believing she'd learn even more. Believe it or not, that child who had been taught in inner-school until being placed in a private school came in already smarter than her private schooled fellow students who had attended a private school all of their lives. The child out tested them on every test. So, there's something else going on here when inner-city students are testing below average. The only thing that comes to mind is there are sabotagers among them. Helping to create this image of failure.

That said, I have heard members of the black community virtually say the exact same thing. The Rhonda Thurmonds out there, racist or not, are only bouncing off the words many have heard members of the black community say bad things about their own children, their own communities, their own race.

After being warned for years and years the power of words, it took a personal tragedy for a well known entertainer and activist to realize this is the same America yesterday, today, tomorrow and always. The same America he grew up in having being chased by lynch mobs. Some things don't change.

When some of the most racist hate groups in America start to use your words as quotes against your own, you know whatever messages you intended to send were not the right things to say from the very beginning.

Just remember, everyone who smiles in your face and offers you something is not your friend. They're just sizing you up to be the main course of the meal.

Rhonda Thurman should choose her words carefully or expect the backlash. "Black Community Leaders" should stop only jumping on the bandwagon when they think race is involved and be this vocal on trying to solve some of the problems that plague the inner city. Get on on board to find and promote positive community involvement for our kids so that they are not being killed or killing everyday. Get involved with promoting activites so they are not hanging out doing nothing the entire summer. School is about to start and once again nobody has mention the kids everyone is on their on self promotion agenda. As for the school board as a whole they've proven where their priorities are.

July 7, 2011 at 1:16 p.m.

yikes....

It's people like Bluedagger who give me hope. We need to own our own culture as black people. Hispanics will be the majority by 2023 and they are graduating from college in record numbers. Why can't we do the same thing?

1) If housing projects in the inner city were eliminated and those receiving housing vouchers were spread out, this would eliminate most of the gang activity. Those kids frequently grow up without fathers so who do they have to look up to? Other gang members in the community.

2) It's not just a problem for city officials. It starts with the parents. You have to instill some kind of goal for your kids. Emphasize education instead of sitting on your azz while your kids watch you have more kids and collect checks. That's all some of them know and it's a never-ending cycle.

3) We enable this cycle with government handouts and cries of racism. Here's your check now go smoke crack and kill yourself... We forget about these people until there's a homicide on the news, and when people speak out they are quickly struck down as racist, invalidating our voice as intelligent black people. This needs to stop. Stop being a victim and take responsibility for your own choices....

xyzyra: your example really only supports what Rhonda was saying. You gave an example of ONE child in the inner city schools whose parents cared enough about her education to take it more seriously. Obviously, this child cared about it as well and bettered herself by trying. Rhonda's point was that too many of them don't care, don't try or anything. And she was wondering, if slaves 200 years ago cared enough to better themselves one their own, why don't these kids try to do it when they are having all the opportunities given to them? Slaves learned to read. Some of these inner-city kids at these schools don't even try to go that far. The reason they test below average is because several don't show up for class but one day a week (if that). Many who do show up to class sleep through it or listen to their iPods, no matter what the teachers try to do. Many, who are smart and COULD pass most of the tests, just don't care. So when given the test, they turn it in blank, or just scribble something down and turn it in. That is if they turn it in at all.
The rest of your post didn't make much sense...

I do believe that the comments made by Ms. Thurman may have been offensive to some but I do not know her personally to call her a racist. However, the real issue is our children. I have always thought of Tennessee as being part of the Bible belt, but when I read these article, I am confused. I will not voice my position on this subject, I just want us to be the One Nation under God as we say we are and God is about love and not hate. Have a blessed day.

We need more school board members that are 'only' hairdressers, housewives, grocery store clerks, etc They are the only ones that live in the real world and aren't in it for all the gold and glory. I thank Rhonda for watching pennies.. we have to do it every day, with 2 people working and educating children. We don't have outside government help paying our rent, our food bill, giving us cell phones, etc. We have to pay that out of our wages. Again. Thank you Rhonda & bluedagger. Thank the people too, that know how to type/speak without using all caps!! Favors and her gang that surrounded her as she spoke, should be ashamed and should be out teaching the children how to give to the community instead of protesting, and demanding this and that. Teach your children to help the people who have horrific storm damage. Cut some trees, fix people's homes. Give to the community you live in.

You know this inner city school thing is almost always associated with blacks. The fact of the matter how ever is that there are whites also in some of those schools, and they have it just as bad if not worse in some cases. One the one hand they are white trash to the middle and upper class whites (cute and pitiful when we are children, but throw away people when we get older), and then they are just crackers to most of the blacks they reside near. I was raised in East Chatt and went to school there in the late 70s and early 80s, East Chattanooga, Avondale and Hardy. Let me tell you, it was really rough coming up a white kid in those schools. Not just because of the racism I faced everyday, or the fact that all of the white kids were chased home from school almost every day by black kids. Being poor and living in terrible conditions at home, such as pretending your corn flakes are rasin bran because of all the roaches in it, then adding water because there was no milk. Wearing your cleanest dirty clothes everyday. Hunger pains in class that werent quenched even after free lunch. Coming home from school everyday hoping you hadnt been evicted. Going to school for free breakfast and lunch (By the way, I had perfect attendance,on hamburger day). Forget about learning, who can concentrate on that with all of the crap of my living conditions flying around in the ol tater. Test scores? Im just glad Little Debby adopted our school so I can get me some of them cakes. No job however, at Little Debby when you grow up trailer trash. One of the only people who was ever nice to you, your fourth grade teacher not showing up for school one day, then finding out shed been murdered. Counseling, are you kidding me? No such thing. Being slapped around by a cop at 14 years of age(scratch police officer off my list of wanna be when I grow up). My story isnt aall that bad, compared to some of the others out ther. Both past and present. Folks you cant imagine what some of these kids (OF ALL RACES) go through on a daily basis. For alot of you it would be too much to bare. And for all of these school board members fighting and bickering trying to position themselves for a higher political office or screaming racism at every chance are spitting in the face of every school kid. You dont give a rats ass about these kids or you would get off of your hind parts and use this media coverage to try and advance the cause of the people your job is supposed to be about. THE KIDS. Take the money from one of the tabs you pay at Outback every week and change a kids life. Black leaders AKA Civil rights activists, groups what ever, quit being hypocrites and stand up for the rights of all and not just your group.

whoknows, you obviously missed the point. In order for the student to have been smarter than the private schooled students who'd been in private schooling all of their lives, the inner-city schools couldn't have been as bad as they're being made out to be.

As most everyone constantly harp on and degrade inner city schools, for sure there must be students failing at those other schools too. As many, when they go on to college must take remedial courses. I know when I attended college there were equal numbers to more white students than blacks who had to take those remedial courses.

What the black community needs to understand is that the grass really isn't greener on the other side. Upon closer look, you get to see all those bald spots and dry patches.

There are bad parents in every level and class of society. Rich, poor and in between. Test scores have never told the whole picture. In fact, most anyone can be taught to take and pass a test without actually knowing the subject matter. That's why many scholars would like to do away with these testings altogether. America's children are being over-tested, but they're still not learning the basics. Even those that will pass every test with flying colors. When the time comes for critical thinking, most fail and fail horribly, no matter how high they scored on tests.

Well Rhonda must be correct in her assumptions. You never yell at the dentist until he hits a nerve.

Ms. Favors in like many, but not all black leaders. Say something that I don't like and I will call you a racist. Everyone needs to understand this is not her fault, it was the public (Inner City) schools that taught her this. This is simply a defense mechanism, If I call you a racist I don't have to argue my point.

A great example of this is President Obama, he is an idiot. I will be called a racist for saying it, end of discussion. Now a person with some knowledge may come back and say he is not an idiot, then the discussion begins with both sides making an argument for their point. When someone uses the word Racist, just remember it is a code word for " I have no way to win an argument against this person".

By the way Joanne, aren't you the one that went to the taxi board and made an argument to allow black felons to drive cabs, one might say that is racist....

Hey here is an idea, if you think the schools can't educate your kids in an inner city school. Put them in private school. In private schools there is no disorder in the classroom. There is no dumbing down the course work. They will be rewarded for their efforts. If they don't put out the effort they are put out the door even if someone is paying for it. They might even learn a new language, but it won't be ebonics.

inquiringmind: My wife works, and has worked in an inner city school here in town for many years now. I'm quite aware of what goes on in them. I have lunch with other inner city school teachers and administrators on a semi-regular basis. Trust me, I hear about what goes on. And telling someone to "try hard, do well, and succeed" hardly ignores reality. What are you telling them to do? "Be lazy, sit on your butt, complain about everyone and the government will give you a check for it"? I'm sorry, I'd rather try and fail a million times than never try to better myself.
And I have done work with homeless minitries. Inner city and rural. And I've seen plenty of people who know that they can't blame other for their own situation that they created. Or that they can't rely on others to bring them out of a situation they were born in to. Though they appreciated the help we offered, they were determined to get up on their own for most things.

xyzyra: I don't think you quite understand. Yeah, there are going to be some students, even at inner city schools, that are good, great, or outstanding. I know many students from those inner city schools who have gone on to college, some local, some higher colleges than I would have EVER been able to get into. And I have never, and will never say that the inner city schools are bad. I know many of the teachers. I know how they work with their students and they give them every opportunity they can. And I know how the students disrespect them, ignore them, and threaten them. The level of teaching at inner city schools is not to blame... and no one has been blaming that, as you are insinuating. The problem is the majority of the students apathy towards their education. Your example still just shows how one girl who respected herself enough to try has done very well. And she is not alone. There are many students at those scools who TRY. Who WANT to learn. Who listen and do what they are asked to do, and who do NOT associate themselves with gangs and the like. That doesn't speak for the others though...

HOW WOULD IT LOOK FOR A BLACK PERSON WITH ONLY A "HIGH SCHOOL" DEGREE, AND I REPEAT.. ONLY A "HIGH SCHOOL" DEGREE TO GO TO JEWISH PEOPLE(OR IN OPEN PUBLIC) AND LECTURE THEM ON THE HOLOCAUST. HE WOULD BE CALLED A FOOL AND LAUGH OUT OF TOWN NOT JUST BY JEWISH PEOPLE BUT BY THE BLACK PEOPLE OF OUR COMMUNITY.

RHONDA THURMAN DID EXACTLY THAT..BUT INSTEAD OF BEING CORRECTED BY HER FOLLOWERS..SHE IS CHEERED ON AND DEFENDED..YOU NEED TO SELF EXAMINED YOURSELF AND THE CULTURE YOU ARE CREATING FOR YOUR COMMUNITY..AND MORE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CHILDREN...BECAUSE WHEN THEY FIND OUT HOW WRONG YOU ARE THEY WILL REBEL...BELEIVE ME THEY WILL REBEL AGAINST YOU. JOAN FAVOR RESPONDED TO SUMMONS FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY. SHE DID WHAT ANY GROUP WOULD HAVE DONE. SHE DID WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE YOURSELF...BE HONEST DAIDPBS....THE BLACK COMMUNITY HAVE TOLERATED HER VILES COMMENT FOR YEARS AND TURN THE OTHER CHEEK...WHAT OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE WOULD DO THIS...BUT THERE'S A LIMIT TO EVERYTHING..AND NO LONGER WILL SHE GET A FREE PASS...

NOW MY QUESTION TO YOU AND OTHERS FOLLOWERS. ..HAVE YOU NO SHAME!! HAVE YOU NO SHAME!!! YOU CHEER THIS LADY ON AS IF IT A BALL GAME...AND SHE JUST BASTING IN THE ATTENTION SHE GETTING...SHE LOVES IT...REALLY RHONDA IS PLAYING HER FOLLOWERS....SHE HAS THE FEVER(SARAH PALIN)...SAY CRAZY THING AND HER FOLLOWERS CHEERS HER ON...WHAT OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE DO THAT...YOU MAY WANT TO SELF-EXAMINED YOURSELF DAVID...YOU WOULD BE THE FIRST TO CRITCIZE MID-EASTERN PEOPLE FOR THEIR OUTRAGE BEHAVIOR...BUT LOOK AT YOURSELF...I SEE VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE

I am also a black man... I dont have a problem with the stance that Bluedagger has taken because he is entittled to that. However i can gurantee you that he is probably not from the innercity or has had to face the problems that the people in the inner city face>>>How many years are we from legalized segregation? and how long did the oppression last...blacks now suffer from what i call psychological slavery... meaning the oppression that they endured for so long has been passed down from generation to generation and the only way to break that cycle is to do it one family at a time and I take it that bluedaggers family wont have these problems and that is good...unfortunately for bluedagger he can feel however he wants but the reality is that racism still does exist and he can have all the views he wants...to some people he will still be the N word....Our county needs prayer!!!! I am not a Favors supporter or a thruman supporter ...I feel both are wrong.. true SOME slaves learned to read...but those numbers arent on the high end! thurman was wrong for her statement and she was wrong for never giving scales a chance!!! and there is no way we can look at smiths credentials and say he is the man for the job.... they even changed rules for him to get the job!!!! Is this not a problem??? However i will support him because he is what we are stuck with and i want him to Win because if he Wins our kids win...as for favors...she is just being a politician!!!! she saw the camera and she dove into the lights...what are the new innercity schools? last time i saw Tyner High and Tyner middle, Brainerd High>>lol

MILKANDHONEY....YOU ARE TALKING TO A RHONDA THURMAN FOLLOWER(BLUE DAGGER)....HE IS NOT BLACK(BLUE DAGGER)....AND WHEN YOU MENTION BLACK MENTALITY....I WAS TAUGHT BETTER THAN TO THINK LIKE THAT BY MY DAD...NOW IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT HIGH PERCENTAGE OF CHILDREN BORN OUT OF WED-LOCK YOU WOULD HAVE A VALID POINT...BUT TO SLUMP ALL BLACK TOGETTHER ON MENTALITY YOU ARE SO WRONG BRO...ANF THIS IS WHAT RHONDA THURMAN MUST LEARN...WE ARE DIVERSE IN MANY WAYS....RICH,UPPER-CLASS,MIDDLE-CLASS-WORKING, LOW-INCOME CLASS AND UNDERCLASS(LOW MORAL)AS WHITES ARE TOO. DONT PUT US ALL IN ONE BUNCH...OR YOU WILL GET IN TROUBLE DURING SO...

AND YOUR COMMENT ABOUT JOANN FAVORS...DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF SINGLING HER OUT..(SHE IS A FRIEND TO THE COMMUNITY) WHAT YOU DONT WANT TO THE RACDICALS AND THE BLACKS WHO HAVE LOST HOPE TO REACT....THIS TOWN WILL BE ON NATIONAL NEWS..CHATTANOOGA DO NOT NEED THIS.....WE DONT WANT OUR CITY TO BE LIKE SODDY...A REPUTATION AS A RACE DIVIDED TOWN...

JO ANN WAS SUMMONED BY THE BLACK LEADERS,,,WHO HAVE TRIED OVER AND OVER TO WORK WITH RHONDA DISPITE ALL HER NEGATIVE COMMITS ON RADIO TALK SHOW AGAINST INNER CITY STUDENT...DID YOU RESPOND???? A BULLY HAVE TO BE MET HEAD ON...I CAN SAY THIS ..THE BLACK COMMUNITY IS 100% WITH FAVORS...AND SHE IS RESPECTED AND HONORABLE...SO UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT ABOUT JOANN FAVORS NOR JIM SCLAES...THIS IS BIGGER

WHY DONT YOU HAVE A TRACK RECORD????

Chet, u don't have a beef with me...I don't agree with thurman and you don't either...I am from the innercity, I graduated from Howard and I am very active in the school and the community...so when you ask where I am that's where I have been everysince I graduated college...all I do is give back to my comminity...because I owe that to them! But u can't tell me favors is off limits...I will criticize her just like I will Thurman...and who crowned them the black leaders...not me...I have been in that area all my life and I have never had any contact with favors! Sorry that I lived in the innercity till I made it out and I never saw or met favors or seen her do anything in alton park or Howard...but you don't even know me to question what I do or have done but I can gurantee you that the youth and the parents see me and appreciate me more than they do favors

MILKANDHONEY...MAYBE YOU MEAN WELL BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU TRY TO COMPARE JOANN FAVORS WITH RHONDA THURMAN...YOU TALKING ABOUT APPLE AND ORANGE..NO COMPARISON THERE.

I DONT KNOW IF SOMEONE IS PULLING YOU STRINGS OR IF YOU ARE INDEPENDENT POSTER.

YOU MAY BE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER OR MAY NOT BE AWARE OF HISTORY.I REALLY DONT LIKE TO WASTE TIME ON THIS MATTER...BUT YOU ARE SO FLAWED..I WILL GIVE YOU A BRIEF LESSON IN WORLD HISTORY...

WHEN THE BLACKS OF SOUTH AFRICA WAS FIGHTING TO BE LIBERATED THEY CHOSED NELSON MANDELA AS THEIR LEADER..ONE OF HIS BIGGEST ADVERSARY WAS THE TU TU TRIBE...A BUNCH OF REGRESSIVE BLACK TRIBEMEN WHO HAD NO BALCK S.AFRICAN SUPPORT BEHIND THEM.. BUT THE PRO-APARTHIED WHITE OF S.AFRICAN HAD INTEREST IN THAT SEGREGATED SYSTME..THE TU TU TRIBES WAS GIVEN A LARGE AMOUNT OF AIR TIME AND MEDIA TIME AS IF THEY HAD LARGE FOLLOWERS...THIS WAS TACTIC FROM THE PARTY THAT WAS PRO-APARTHIED..THEIR TACTIC WAS TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER...EVENTHOUGH NELSON MANDELIA HAD 99.9% OF BLACK S.AFRICAN SUPPORT.

I KNOW COMMENTS...ARE OPINIONS BUT IT SHOULD HAVE TRUTH ALSO, REP. JOANN FAVOR IS VERY MUCH IN LINE IN CALLING RHONDA THURMAN OUT. REP. FAVOR WAS SUMMON BY THE BLACK LEADERS AND COMMUNITY...SHE HAS 100% OF TRUE BLACK LEADERS BEHIND HER ALONG WITH 100% BLACK COMMUNITY...RHONDA THURMAN BULLYING OF THE LOW INCOME STUDENTS HAVE BEEN TOLERATED FOR 13YEARS...RHONDA HAS A LONG RECORD OF ATTACKING THE LOW-INCOME INNER SCHOOL STUDENTS..ON THE AIR WAVES...RADIO TALK SHOWS AS 102.3 AND MANY OTHER STATIONS AND TOWN HALL MEETING IN SODDY SHE REALLY LOWER THE BOOM!...RHONDA THURMAN IS A OLD WOMAN ATTACKING LOW -INCOME STUDENT...JOANN RESPONDED TO RHONDA BULLYING...

MILKAND HONEY.. DID YOU SEE JOANN STANDING WITH RESPECTED LEADERS OF THAT COMMUNITY. JOANN WAS NOT STANDING BY HERSELF.BUT RHONDA THURMAN WAS STANDING ALONG(EXCEPT FOR THOSE HIDING-BECAUSE THEY ASHAME TO BE SEEN IN OPEN PUBLIC) THEY JUST CHEER HER AFAR

1).MY QUESTION TO YOU IS WHY YOU ATTEMPING TO MAKE THIS A JOANN FAVOR AGAINST RHONDA THURMAN

2). FOR YOU TO SAY JOANN FAVORS HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING FOR ALTON PARK OR HOWARD RELLY RAISE FLAGS ABOUT YOU..BECAUSE IF YOU ARE FROM THAT AREA...YOU WOULD KNOW THAT JOANN FAVORS IS A LEGEND IN THAT COMMUNITY...SHE GAVE UP HIGH PAYING SALARIES TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF HER DISCRICT......SHE IS TOTLALLY DEVOUT..NOT ONLY THE COMMUNITY BUT THE CHURCHED ALSO....WHERE ARE YOU FROM MILKANDHONEY...

3).YOU SAID YOU HAVE NEVER MET JOANN FAVORS...AND YOU LIVE IN THE INNER-CITY...ARE YOU LIVING UNDER A ROCK...IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE IN THE INNER-CITY AND NOT SEE HER...SHE HAS HELPED PEOPLE IN THE INNER CITY ALL HER LIFE...

4). YOU SAY YOU GIVE BACK...YOU GIVE BACK LOL LOL LOL NOW ITS GETTING FUNNY...YOU CANT GIVE TO THE COMMUNITY WITHOUT GOING THRU JOANN FAVOR..LOL LOL LOL

5) ONCE A YEAR SHE SPONSOR A COMMUNITY EVENT AT THE PARK IN FRONT OF HOWARD SCHOOL WHICH DRAWS OVER 10,000 PEOPLE...LOL LOL

7). I'M ALWAYS SUSPICIOUS OF POSTERS WHO START OFF ..I'M A BLACK MAN...I'M A BLACK MAN...I'M A BLACK MAN...LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL YOU ARE SELLING THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU ARE BLACK....BLACK NEVER START OFF LIKE THAT.......LOL LOL

8).MILKANDHONEY...HAVE NO COMMENT TRACK RECORD MILKANDHONEY DIDNT EXIST BEFORE UNTIL JULY 10.....PRETTY SMART FOR A BLACK-GUY WHO GRADUATE FRON INNER-CITY SCHOOL...LOL LOL LOL LOL

9) ONCE AGAIN THIS IS EVIDENT HOW STUPID RHONDA THURMAN FOLLOWERS REALLY ARE...THEY WILL STOOP TO THIS LEVEL......MILKANDHONEY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT IF THE FOOL HAD ENOUGH SENSE TO SHUT UP WHILE HE WAS AHEAD...HE KEPT TALKING AND GAVE HIMSELF AWAY...TOO BUSY TRYING TO DEMEAN FAVORS AND HE SLIPPED LOL LOL LOL LOL BECAUSE SHE WAS BORN IN THAT AREA....SHE FRENQUENT THAT AREA ...AND SHE IS A LEGEND THERE..IF ANYONE DONT KNOW THAT THEY ARE OUTSIDER...MILKANDHONEY...YOU SHOULD HAVE SHUT UP WHILE YOU WERE AHEAD LOL LOL LOL

i dont see anything racist about her comment, some slaves did learn to read (mostly from the bible and at home and without the help of whites and a school system that most black children have today and without all the other resources black children have to their advantage housing, lunch programs, etc.)so it is hard to see why they are not learning and easy to see that good hard earned money isnt helping. i think parents should not relie just on schools to teach their children, but that they should teach their children to read, write etc. at home as well.children also must want to learn and if not parents and schools should get down to the nitty gritty to see why a child does not want to learn, the problem can be at school or at home or both.

Alright, enough defending one idiot over another.

Now listen to this person form her thoughts. The bad thing is that most of her fellow reps hover around this level of cognitive thought. Yes that's all elasticities included. And yes folks, these are our leaders, this is an example of who "fights" for our betterment.

Just a bunch of old people fussing about dogs. That's what your tax dollars fund.

I would not be surprised if the meeting in which we decided to spend $325,000.00 for a city web site was any more intelligible.

There are no Dems or Repubs that I would refer to as my buddies.

I believe that the two party system has failed us as a nation for a very long time.

Loosely scripted "battles" between the two parties have only served to keep voters casting ballots with their hearts and not their minds.

They (party leaders, reps, politicians in general) are mostly out of date and out of touch.

I would venture to say that they wouldn't last a day making important logistical decisions in any major (privately owned of course) manufacturing facility.

And chet, you need to quit watching "fox tv", I thought I had told you that it was bad for your head.

milkandhoney...why do u think Favors is in it for some other reason? It was about time the black leadership stood up around here in Chattanooga. What does Favors have to gain? I have personally spoke with Favors on several occasions and she is highly involved with issues in TN legislature. She is aware of what is happening and she should have been one of the last individuals called to speak up. There are local community leaders who should have taken the lead...and I am with u on one point...a Lonnnngggg time ago...
