Carmike Majestic 12 theater features live ballet from Paris

Friday, July 8, 2011

The Majestic 12 will present a live, via satellite, production of "Children of Paradise" by the Paris Opera Ballet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday as part of Carmike Cinemas' Ballet in Cinema series.

An encore presentation is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. July 20.

"Children of Paradise" draws on Jacques Prévert's scenario from the 1945 film by Marcel Carné and features dancer Étoile José Martinez's in his first major ballet.

The choreography will remind viewers of life in long-gone Paris, around the first half of the 19th century with its artists, theaters and its cabarets.

Ezio Toffolutti's sets are suggestive of a movie set and with costumes by dancer Étoile Agnès Letestu, the mime Baptiste "unreels the thread of his memories: his meeting with Garance [and] his impossible love for that marvelous and elusive woman."

It is set to an original score by Marc-Olivier Dupin.

The choreography alternates large ensembles with the intimacy of the lovers' pas de deux.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for chldren. They may be purchased online at www.car mike.com, www.fandango.com or at the Carmike Majestic 12 box office, 311 Broad St.
