University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Jordan Britt maintained a two-stroke lead with her second consecutive 68 Tuesday in the Chattanooga Women’s Amateur golf tournament, but former GPS teammate Mary Alice Murphy — now at Mercer — stayed close at 138 with a 68 of her own at Creeks Bend. Baylor player Emily Javadi is third at 142 after a 72. The senior division returns to play today with Deedee Raulston holding a two-stroke lead after her 81 on Monday.
* LOUDON, Tenn. — UTC golfer Steven Fox from Hendersonville tied for fourth with a 2-under-par 70 in TGA Match Play Championship qualifying Tuesday at the Tennessee National course at Tellico Village, and Lookout Mountain’s Steve Johnson tied for seventh at 71. Among other area entrants, Ryan Thornton tied for 13th at 72, Tom Schreiner and Jeremy Lawson shared 20th at 73, Kyle Wittler and Sam Bedwell tied for 27th at 74 and Chris Schmidt tied for 33rd at 75. Tim Crawford and Wes Farris shot 78s and Tullahoma’s Jordan Haugen had a 79, while Gerald Burrell and Andrew Weathers carded 80s, McKeehanon Rue had an 81 and Ricky Johnson Jr. shot 82, tying for 59th. Knoxville’s Elliott Wickenden was the medalist with a 68.
* Brooks Thomas and Samantha Griffith won the older divisions Tuesday in the William Bryan Memorial Junior golf tournament at Lookout Mountain with two-day point totals of 53 and 58, respectively. Thomas held off Zachary Hester by three points. Scott Stevens won the 14-15 boys’ group with 50 points, five more than runner-up Patrick McDonald and Tucker Snipes, and Reese Scobey piled up the tournament’s highest points total (62) in edging Sport Allmond (59.5) and Justin Hickman (58) in the 12-13 division. Katherine Holmes won in 12-14 girls with 35 points.
* The UTC women’s soccer team’s 2011 schedule was announced Tuesday, and it includes 10 home games. “It’s always a plus to get to play at home, and more than half our matches this year will be at Finley [Stadium],” Mocs coach J.D. Kyzer said in a school release. The season opens Aug. 19 at Tennessee Tech, but UTC will then host Austin Peay, Gardner-Webb and Lipscomb on Aug. 21, 28 and Sept. 2. The Mocs will go to Gardner-Webb’s tournament for games Sept. 9 and 11 against Stetson and Jacksonville State and then play Alabama A&M at home on Sept. 16 before beginning the Southern Conference part of the schedule Sept. 23 and 25 at defending SoCon champion UNC Greensboro and Elon. UTC will host The Citadel on Sept. 30 and College of Charleston and Furman on Oct. 2 and 6. Then come SoCon road games at Wofford (Oct. 9), Western Carolina (Oct. 14) and Appalachian State (Oct. 16) before Finley contests on Oct. 21 and 23 against Georgia Southern and Davidson. UTC will end its regular season Oct. 26 at Samford. Donna-Kay Henry, No. 2 all-time in UTC goals and points, returns for her senior season.
* The Chattanooga Cyclones 13-under baseball team won the 14-under Smokey Mountain Classic this past weekend in Knoxville. Tyson Cooper and Brandon Dendy each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Noah Hill had two RBIs in an opening 8-3 win over the Knoxville Orioles, when Justin Glover got the pitching win in relief. Hill had two hits and an RBI in a 7-2 loss to the Cherokee Indians, but then the Cyclones beat the Orioles again with three hits and an RBI from Cade Evans, a two-run hit from Hank Norton and the pitching win from Devin Lancaster. The Cyclones edged the Seymour Eagles 4-3 in a semifinal with Glover getting two hits and two RBIs plus the pitching win, Alex Darras recording a save plus a triple and a run and Dendy adding two hits. Caleb Pezez’s walk-off single gave the Cyclones a 5-4 championship win over Diamond Baseball. Lancaster had three hits, two RBIs and a run while Evans had two hits and Darras scored twice and pitched along with Justin Aslinger.
