HUD asking for information from Multicultural chamber

by Cliff Hightower

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is sending a letter of inquiry to the Tennessee Multicultural Chamber of Commerce over $540,000 that HUD gave the chamber, a HUD spokesman said today.

Joe Phillips, HUD spokesman, said the chamber would have 15 days to respond and will be required to submit documents supporting the expenditure of the money, which reportedly wwas spent on the development of a Business Solutions Center that has never been built.

The Multicultural Chamber of Commerce has been under fire this week after a city audit review said there has been financial mismanagement in the organization.

For complete details, read tomorrow’s edition of the Times Free Press.

Let's just get right to the point and make a decision; if the Multi-Cultural Chamber is going to continue to receive funding from the city, cut the same amount of funding from the White Chamber of Commerce. If the White Chamber can't take care of the needs of the city's businesses, cut it.

I am ashamed to think that this wonderful city of ours was duped into thinking that a "multi-cultural" anything was needed. This type of reasoning helps perpetuate racial stereotypes. By having the "multi" chamber, we are calling the existing chamber racists in a back-handed way.

I won't even go into who bought and sold the "multi" chamber real estate transactions, though this needs to be made public as well, from who the realtor and broker were, and who owned the property, and who signed the check.

Sounds like someone is going to have a date in front of a Federal Judge soon.

Kudos to Mr. Hightower for an excellent investigation and reporting on Chattanooga/Hamilton County corruption.

Also thanks to the TFP editors. Stories like these never happened with Tom Griscom running things.

That's why the multi-cultural chamber was established in the first place. The once sole chamber pretty much blocked minorities out of their club. However, if all that's being said about this multi-chamber is true, I'm disgusted and sadden. Here they had a chance to really do good for their people and communities, but it seems they lined their own pockets and the pockets of their friends instead. Greed will get you everytime.
