Pitman qualifies for Olympic trials

KNOXVILLE - Baylor School graduate Sloane Pitman won the women's 200 individual medley and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials with a finish of 2 minutes, 18.51 seconds Saturday in the Southeastern Swimming Championships at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Pitman is about to begin her junior year at UT. Baylor senior Christian Carbone qualifed Friday for the Olympic trials in the men's 400 IM.

• CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - While Tennessee teammate Brent Sterling qualified Saturday for the national championships with a seventh-place finish in the Zone A USA Diving National Preliminary Meet 1-meter competition, former Baylor standout Jordan Mauney just missed making the zone finals with a 14th-place finish. Mauney has another shot at the nationals in platform diving today.

• Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville won $4,000 for his triumph Friday night in the Southern All Stars race for Super Late Model cars at Boyd's Speedway. Chattanooga's Ronnie Johnson charged from the 11th starting spot to finish second, and area Georgia driver Chip Brindle was third with William Thomas of Phenix City, Ala., fourth and Maryville's Jason Welshan fifth. Welshan won the Crate Late Model race for the fifth time in a row, with Hixson's Robby Mason second and Jerry Coffman, Grayson York and Andy Picklesimer completing the top five. Booger Brooks and Dallas Brooks won in A- and B-Hobby with Dewayne Wilson and Raymond Shepard their runners-up, and Tommy Hughes won in FWD with Hailey Cresswell finishing second.
