Tea baggers love to talk about FREEDOM. That's what this is all about...take the country back...before we lose all our freedoms...it's that liar-in-chiefs fault 2....obumble...that muslim commie nazi....

Anyway, that's what tea baggers howl about all the time: how our freedoms are being stolen away, how we need second amendment remedies to bring them back, blah blah blah.

There is, however, one exception, one notable caveat: YOU MUST DRINK THE KOOL-AID!

You must think like them, vote like them, and most importantly, WORSHIP like them. (It helps to look like them, too, but it's obviously not a deal breaker.)

According to tea baggers like Herman Cain, Freedom of Religion is not a Constitutional absolute.

Surprised he isn't doing better in the polls.

It is time to stop giving Herman Cain's bigotry a free pass. The man and his poison need to be seen clearly and taken seriously.

Cain's prejudice is against Muslims. Open religious prejudice is usually enough to disqualify a candidate for national office, but not, apparently, when the religion in question is Islam.

On Sunday, Cain took the position that any community in the nation has the right to prohibit Muslims from building a mosque. Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace was questioning him about his the attempt by some citizens of Murfreesboro, Tenn., to halt construction of a mosque. Wallace noted that the mosque has operated at a nearby site for more than 20 years, and asked, what the big deal is.

Cain launched into a conspiratorial fantasy about how the proposed place of worship is "not just a mosque for religious purposes" and how there are "other things going on."

This imagined nefarious activity, it turns out, is a campaign to subject the nation and the world to Islamic religious law. Anti-mosque activists in Murfreesboro are "objecting to the fact that Islam is both a religion and a set of laws, sharia law." Cain said. "That's the difference between any one of our other traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes."

Wallace was persistent in pressing Cain to either own up to his prejudice or to take it back. "But couldn't any community then say we don't want a mosque in our community?" Wallace asked. "They could say that," Cain replied.

"So you’re saying any community, if they want to ban a mosque . . . ” Wallace began. "Yes, they have the right to do that," Cain said.

For the record, they don't. For the record, there is no attempt to impose sharia law; Cain is taking arms against a threat that exists only in his own imagination. It makes as much sense to worry that the Amish will force us all to commute by horse and buggy.

As Wallace pointed out, Cain is an African American who is old enough to remember Jim Crow segregation. "As someone who, I’m sure, faced prejudice growing up in the 1950s and the 1960s, how do you respond to those who say you are doing the same thing?"

Cain’s response?: "I tell them that's absolutely not true, because it is absolutely, totally different. . . . We had some laws that were restricting people because of their color and because of their color only."

Wallace asked, "But aren’t you willing to restrict people because of their religion?"

Said Cain: "I’m willing to take a harder look at people that might be terrorists."

Generations of bigots made the same argument about black people: They’re different. Many of them may be all right, but some are a threat. Therefore, it's necessary to keep all of them under scrutiny and control.

Assuming Islam is a religion and a set of laws, I am wondering if Mr. Cain has actually READ the Bible? Leviticus is a catalog of laws. What are the ten commandments if not laws? Is he aware of the Torah? What is "do onto others as you would have them do unto you" if not a law.

All religions serve to provide a) an explanation for existence, b) a sense of meaning and purpose in life and c) a guide for behavior.

Fact..Four years ago I'd have 'bet the farm' there was no way anyone whose name might rhyme with one of America's all-time enemies could ever get 'the nomination' let alone win the popular vote for president.

I was wrong..I admit it..but I have, at least, given him the same support I've given in the past to others I didn't vote for. Pity some of you can't be as honest or forgiving..tsk..tsk.

Now.. as to Herman Cain and his chances next year..especially given his current rhetoric..attitude..plus the fact our current president set an historical precedent in 2008 notwithstanding...

Assuming they own the property and meet the criteria for a building permit there is no reason to deny it. Is someone concerned that a large number of Americans are going to convert to Islam? If they do so be it, that is their choice. If U.S. law is broken then prosecute. I would bet the administration is using the patriot act to monitor for terrorist activity.

Both parties insist on personal freedom except when it doesn't fit their view or ideology. Both parties use the tax code at the expense of the middle class to manipulate but with different objectives.

Cain just shot his self in the ass, he should save time and money and quit the race.

On the one hand, we have a duty to respect his right to say foolish and hateful things. On the other hand, we also have a duty to stand up and say that hateful thinking is not place in the minds of our elected officials.

Some say southern states voting resulted from the mass movement south from many northeastern states. I don't know if this or your opinion is right, but, neither do you. Your skatoma doesn't allow you to see anything blocked by it.

Harp, NAFTA is and always was a Republican initiative. Bush I tried his best of fast-track the passage of NAFTA prior to leaving office, but due to squabbles about the bill, he had to pass it on to Clinton.

Harp, NAFTA is and always was a Republican initiative. Bush I tried his best of fast-track the passage of NAFTA prior to leaving office, but due to squabbles about the bill, he had to pass it on to Clinton, who added clauses that were meant to protect American workers.

When "Christians" want to post the 10 commandments on the Courthouse lawn, how is that not trying to impose Jewish Law? Why do these people not see that there is no difference? Why do they not see that any attempt to impose sharia would never pass. It would be clearly unconstitutional.

The real danger here is that people like Cain are promoting the idea that all Muslims are terrorist. This is inflammatory and could lead to more violence against innocent people.

This guy is a nut cake and needs to be called out on it.

ITguys contention that Cain is “promoting the idea that all Muslims are terrorist.” While it may be perceived as inflammatory, there is a certain amount of justification for this. Metaphorically, if one looks far to the east, the sunrise is often obscured by never ending violence, smoke and flames.

You have to see the whole Rosa Parks connection Clay is drawing here. I don't think it makes him a racist, but it is a blatant hijacking of a cause that has no parallel to Cain's comments. Cain isn't saying muslims are inferior or undeserving of living in America or sitting in the front of the bus. He is just saying they are dangerous and their religion, rules and ideals are exactly opposite the beliefs and laws the USA was founded upon.

I also think your comparison lacks logic. Inspiring, is far less specific than "pro-business", "anti-tax" or "pro-america" and the same for "he's gonna change america". "He's not Bush" is the only phrase that isn't open for interpretation.

In candidate Cain's case, I would recommend the First and Fourteenth Amendments, especially the “Free Exercise” section of the First Amendment:

There are somewhere between 1.2 and 1.57 BILLION followers of Islam on the planet. If all of them were terrorists, then the world would have its hands full. As it is, the extremists who claim to be Muslim and have hijacked the religion for their own reasons, number into the tens of thousands, at best.

It is just as illogical to consider anyone who is Muslim to be a potential terrorist as it is to consider every Christian who staunchly believes that abortion is wrong, could murder an abortionist.

Limric, it isn't the least bit ironic. Cain isn't doing anything like what the bus driver and police wanted Rosa Parks to do. He didn't suggest they be relegated to sit in the back of the bus literally or metaphorically. He merely suggested that they were doing what they have attempted to do in each and every society they have lived in. Muslims never "melt" into any society with which their group lives, they always try to change the society around them to match their own.
They can't do anything else and remain muslim. You should try reading their holy texts sometime. You might be enlightened. Their culture and religion are all about conquest and subjugation. It isn't as Alprova is painting the picture. The Billions of Muslims who aren't terrorists just aren't devout and aren't following the letter of the law of Islam just like there are lots of Christians who don't follow the letter of the law of Christ. The terrorists are the only true devout muslims. It's all in the Koran. You should read it and see if you don't agree.

Alprova, there is a huge difference between Christians and muslims. Christianity doesn't call for the death of those who break it's laws, Islam does. But you probably knew that. After all, Islam litterally means submit.

I have lived in the Middle East working as a writer of questionable repute; and to quote some of my Syrian acquaintances, the morals of a donkey. To which I am proud. I have first hand knowledge and experiences with Arab people, culture and Islam. Few if any posting here do.

Al That is not totally true about nafta. Clinton promoted the initiative heavily. It was his idea that he could help promote better living and working conditions for those in third world countries by allowing trade to flow to the us. The condition was that these countries would have to raise the wages and adhere to international standards of the working conditions and eliminate or reduce the use of child labor. Also at the time the us economy was stagnant and to promote more business opportunities for us companies it was advantageous to open up foreign trade to sell or products. Clinton was very much the reason for nafta as Bush 1.

Although we put people in a designated certain race,YOU cannot perceive the individual, only the race as a whole slew of people you have to be very careful of.

In my 86 years, I have found that individual different people from different races are as different from one another as you and I.

That is a simple concept. I am not talking about police or firemen or political leaders. I am talking about individuals, no matter their race, creed, political beliefs, wealthy or poor.

It so happened, my granddaughter went to Egypt not to long ago and had a wonderful time with her friends.

I have a family nearby from Egypt. They are Muslim Americans. They run a business and I would much rather have them a closer neighbor than some of the riff-raff I've had to deal with as neighbors in the past.

By the way, they have a religious code almost exactly the same as our Ten Commandments, and as I remember, in the same order.

Oh, well! Perhaps you'll grow up and learn.

I'm going to have to side with 'inthemiddle' on NAFTA. Out of the fog of memory I remember Clinton promoting it like a used car salesman. I happen to be one of those that voted for Ross Perot precisely because of that. NAFTA passed, the rest is history.

Clinton wanted NAFTA bad and viewed it as a major achievement in his administration. He pledged to support in the next election any member of congress of both parties that voted for it plus a few other comments a history buff like you needs to read.

Another day, another tea bagger chorus of no new revenue, no spending cuts, no compromise, and no raising the debt ceiling. House republicans are not driving a hard bargain to get the best possible deal before they agree to raise the debt ceiling. They think it’s a hoax.

Alabama republican Mo Brooks said, “Our credit rating should be improved by not raising the debt ceiling.” Arkansas republican Eric Crawford said that if America were to default the government could just move some money around. “That wouldn’t work for just a few days. That would work for a few years.” He also said that to assume defaulting was a big deal was, “... an arrogant attitude to take.” Tim Walberg, republican from Michigan, added that they should, “Hold the line,” meaning let the Country simply default. Florida representative Allen West accused the President of fear mongering.

Michele Bachman, republican from Minnesota, said before cameras and microphones, “This is a misnomer…that if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 Trillion that somehow the United States would go into default and we would lose the full faith and credit of the United States. That is simply not true.”

Louis Gohmert, republican from Texas, also went on TV to announce, “You would think that a responsible leader in this country would make sure that we encourage bond holders, that we encourage people that held our debt, ‘You don’t have to worry about anything. The only thing you guys have to fear is fear itself." Not sure why Louis quoted FDR, but why should anything these people say make sense?

Remarkably, this economic fiasco is entirely self inflicted. Tonight, if a wave of sanity were to suddenly sweep through the House, a clean one-paragraph Bill to raise the debt ceiling could be drafted and passed by voice vote in about 10 minutes. The Senate would echo its approval and the President would sign it immediately.

But no, we are doomed to again hear, no new revenue, no spending cuts, no compromise, and no raising the debt ceiling.

And the best part? The knot headed republicans blame Obama!

Recently, the bond rating agencies that gave junk derivatives triple-A ratings threatened to downgrade US Treasury bonds if the White House and Congress did not reach a deficit reduction deal and debt ceiling increase. The downgrade threat is not credible, and neither is the default threat. Both are make-believe crises that are being hyped in order to force cutbacks in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

If the rating agencies downgraded Treasuries, the company executives would be arrested for the fraudulent ratings that they gave to the junk that Wall Street peddled to the rest of the world. The companies would be destroyed and their ratings discredited. The US government will never default on its bonds, because the bonds, unlike those of Greece, Spain, and Ireland, are payable in its own currency. A reasonable question may be why does there have to be a debt limit for elected officials to act responsibly and be good stewards of the money they confiscate from people and business.

Had they acted responsibly in the past we would be like those countries that have a positive balance. China and Arabia have a sovereign wealth fund in the billions they invest around the world including ownership in American companies. America at one point was owed money the way we are now in debt to many.

Do we really need over 700 military basis in other countries around the world? The federal government is like a family with an annual income of $36,000 spending $61,000 every year for years. Would you loan that family money so they could keep spending at the current or a slightly less rate? When do they begin paying their debts or would you loan them more and let them commit their heirs to paying what they owe?

Medicare is a problem with more going out than coming in, adjust the premiums and taxes to fill the gap. Social security is not an issue for at least 20 years, remove the cap so the high earners pay on all income like those below the cap do, raise the eligibility age consistent with the actuarial tables.

Grants, subsidies and other tools of manipulation are a real problem in addition to 11,000 words of tax code favoring some businesses and the wealthy.

Both parties are so compromised by special interest and in some cases economic ignorance the last minute results will most likely be catastrophic.

Nobody will change their minds, but I will at least say both side of the isle are responsible for the situation we are in which has been building for decades. It did not start with Obama, but he has escalated the debt and destruction of this country with his socialistic policies. I will not be here to see what historian say about him, but will almost bet he will go down as the worst President this country has ever had.

That was not the point of the cartoon. At all. Not even close. The cartoon points out the hypocrisy of Presidential candidate (LOL) Herman Caine. He said that Muslim's should not have Freedom of Religion in this Country. It should be legal for a local municipality to prevent a mosque from being built.

Okay, numb nuts, go back and read Caine's original quote. Then substitute the word 'church' for the word 'mosque' and tell us what you think. It can be any church; Baptist, Lutheran, Synagog, Mormon, Catholic, so on and so forth. Do you see the problem?

If government can discriminate against one religion it can discriminate against any religion. Or even ALL religions, and the Constitution clearly states otherwise.

Herman Caine should be opposed to, and more sensitive of, discrimination in any form.

I’m also very concerned about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce training and helping American businesses to relocate their offices to foreign countries to avoid paying their fair share of U.S. taxes.

Last I checked, all buildings, religious or otherwise, must adhere to codes. This includes mosques and churches. Can you show me where in a building code that mosques are specifically forbidden?

Correct. Public schools are not to adjust their programs for one religious group. Muslims can ask school cafeterias to offer pork-free options.

As well, I pay for public schools too and expect those schools to not favor the majority religion.

Apparently no one will hire chet123 because he won't work for what he is worth. Looking at his post almost persuades me that my contention the minimum wage should be higher may not be justified. His persitent contention that welfare is good is a clue of his not working situation
