University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Stephan Jaeger is one of 138 NCAA Division I golfers named to the 2011 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar team. Former teammate Derek Rende made the team in 2009 and '10, and former Baylor School standout Harris English is another honoree this year, following his senior season at Georgia. The criteria are a minimum 3.2 grade point average, at least two years of college competition and a 76.0 or better stroke average while playing in at least 70 percent of a team's rounds in a season. Jaeger, the Southern Conference golfer of the year the last two seasons, compiled a 3.575 GPA and a 71.67 stroke average in 2010-11. He shot 1 under par through 10 tournaments. "Stephan is the true definition of student-athlete," Mocs coach Mark Guhne said in a school release. "He has tremendous work ethic and is very balanced academically, athletically and socially. His tournament preparation is as good as anyone I've been around."

• FAIRFIELD GLADE, Tenn. -- Chattanooga's Brooke Pancake, who won multiple high school state titles while playing golf for Baylor School, is tied for third place after shooting a 2-under-par 70, Thursday's first round in the 2011 Tennessee Women's Open at Stonehenge Golf Club. Jefferson City's Kendall Martindale has a three-shot lead with a 66, one ahead of Christina Lecuyer of Conway, Ark. Behind Pancake, now a senior at Alabama, the next area player is UTC sophomore Jordan Britt, tied for 22nd at 76.

Softball

• ATLANTA -- After a year back on the UTC softball staff, Lee Dobbins is leaving his hometown again to be an assistant coach at Emory University in Atlanta. He begins his new duties Aug. 15. In his third stint at UTC -- and he helped Lady Mocs coach Frank Reed previously at Chattanooga State -- Dobbins worked mainly with pitchers and catchers and the team went 44-14 for a school-record winning percentage of .759. "Lee Dobbins will be a tremendous addition to the Emory program," Emory head coach Penny Siqueiros said in a school release Thursday. "He brings a vast amount of collegiate experience in all phases of the game." Dobbins worked at Austin Peay from 2008 to '09 and also has worked at Tusculum and the 1999-2000 season at Tennessee. "I am thrilled to be a part of the Emory softball program and the university," he said in the Emory release. "Coach Siqueiros has built a national [Division III] powerhouse at Emory, and the prospect of helping the program take another step to the top is very appealing. Emory has all the tools to be the top team in all of Division III, and with my experience I hope to be able to help make that a reality."

• The Chattanooga district champion 49ers 50-over men's softball team is scheduled to open play tonight at 8 CDT in the Tennessee Senior Olympics in Franklin. The 49ers, who finished third in the 2010 state tournament, face Team ABC of Nashville in the seven-team bracket. The 49ers players are Bobby Adams, Chuck Grant, Jim Grant, Kevin Highsmith, Jeff Jones, Ted Ledwell, Scotty Lewis, Ellis Mayfield, Greg Nobles, Art Pendergrass, Kirby Scott, Tom Watkins, Wayne Weathers, Rick Webb and Butch Womack.

Football

• WALESKA, Ga. -- Former UTC football player Rusty Wright was one of the first two assistant coaches announced Thursday for the new Reinhardt University football program. Wright, who played 1992-95 for the Mocs after growing up in Augusta, Ga., will be the defensive coordinator. He was the linebackers and special teams coach at Furman last year and previously worked at UTC, Butler, Miami (Ohio) and Gardner-Webb. "I think it's going to be a real neat experience getting the chance to start a football program," he said in a Reinhardt release. "Having the opportunity to start from the ground up with the building, making contacts and being able to recruit the state of Georgia is exciting." The head coach, Dr. Danny Cronic, said he "called and got five excellent recommendations of what Rusty could do. He's what we need for our defense. I've been nothing but impressed every time I'm with him. He's also technologically savvy, which is important."

• SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Brian Newberry has been hired as the defensive coordinator for new Sewanee head football coach Tommy Laurendine. Newberry also will coach linebackers and will be the men's golf coach in the spring semester. A former Baylor University defensive back, he had been the defensive backs coach at Elon in the Southern Conference since 2007 and previously was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at longtime Sewanee nonconference rival Washington and Lee. "He is very knowledgeable and understands Division III athletics as a whole," Laurendine said in a Sewanee release. "He and I have known each other since 2000, back in our days at Southern Arkansas University, so there is a trust factor involved as well. Brian is a great fit for the University of the South and the community of Sewanee."

Swimming

• On the heels of the report that the Baylor School girls' swim team was No. 1 among independent schools in the national dual-meet rankings for 2010-11, the Baylor boys ranked No. 2 in the ratings by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association. The NISCA uses every school's top three times in each individual and relay event and adds up the associated power point score with each swim. The Baylor boys have been in the top five in dual meet rankings five years in a row, with national championships in 2008 and '09, and this year's 5,889 point total is the third highest in program history. "This group of boys, especially our seniors, improved dramatically over their time at Baylor," coach Dan Flack said in a release. "They were able to win our state championship as the underdog and thus posted an impressive final ranking."

Tennis

• Jackson Tresnan of Apopka, Fla., and Hixson resident William Disterdick from the UTC men's tennis team made the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete list for 2010-11. That requires a minimum grade point average of 3.5. Tresnan had a team-high 14 singles wins and an 8-1 record at No. 4, and Disterdick had eight singles wins. They will be among five Mocs starters returning for 2011-12.

• Top-seeded Chad Woodham and Christine Palisoc won the 2011 City Closed Junior 16-under tennis singles championships Thursday at the Champions Club, and Matt Barnett and Corinne Spann likewise were No. 1 seeds winning the 12s titles, but the 14-under girls' winner was third-seeded Sarah Joyce. Ethan Palisoc had won the 14s boys' crown Wednesday, also as the No. 1 seed.
