Fire destroys Garretts Chapel Baptist Church in Walker County

Officials are still investigating the cause of a fire that burned down a Walker County church during the night.

Firefighters spent all night putting out flames at the Garretts Chapel Baptist Church after a neighbor reported the fire shortly before 11 p.m.

The fire destroyed both the adjoining church buildings that were remodeled in the 1990s, said Walker County Assistant Fire Chief Waymond Westbrook.

No one was inside when the flames began, he said.

Westbrook and the state fire marshal are investigating the cause of the fire today.
