A Spring City, Tenn., textile company will undergo a $3 million expansion expected to add 25 more jobs.

SSM Industries, a 19-year-old supplier of flame- resistant fiber fabrics, plans to add 13 employees immediately to its 90-employee staff, according to an announcement Thursday from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

Eventually, the 45,000-square-foot plant addition should add up to 25 more workers.

Paul Chandler, SSM vice president of industrial development, said the addition will enable SSM Industries to create specialized yarns to enhance its offering of highly technical protective fabrics.

"This expansion will take SSM Industries to the next level in the textile manufacturing industry, and we are excited about the opportunities this expansion will allow us," Chandler said.

SSM fabrics are used by the U.S. military as well as in industries such as fire and rescue, auto racing and gas and electric utility.

In a statement, Economic Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty said the expansion is part of the state's renewed effort to promote growth of existing industry in Tennessee.

"Under Gov. Haslam's Jobs4TN plan, we have intensified our economic development efforts surrounding existing Tennessee companies, as they are by far the major job creators in the state and the driving force behind growing our economy," Hagerty said.
