Chattanooga: Babysitter, kids thank firefighters who saved their lives

Thursday, June 2, 2011

A curious 2-year-old boy named Antonio, wearing a red plastic firefighter's hat, sat in his grandmother's arms today as Chattanooga firefighter Brandon Atkins said, "It's nice to meet you."

On Feb. 12, Atkins carried an unconscious Antonio Jackson and his 14-month-old sister, Destiny, out of a burning house at 70 Maude St.

Today, Antonio returned with his family and babysitter, 22-year-old Brandy Curry, to meet the firefighters who saved their lives.

"I guess all I can say is 'thank you,'" said Curry, who teared up off and on throughout the reunion at Fire Station No. 1 at 218 E. Main St.

Four firefighters carried out Curry, Destiny and Antonio from the home engulfed in flames.

Destiny died from smoke inhalation. Curry sustained second- and third-degree burns to much of her body, including most of her left arm.

The fire was ruled accidental and a cause has not been determined, according to authorities.

All 15 firefighters who responded to the home received certificates and the four firefighters who pulled the occupants out received life saving award medals.

"That's the greatest award, though," said firefighter Michael Battle, nodding in the direction of Curry, who sat surrounded by loved ones. "It's indescribable."
