English win helps Georgia advance

STILLWATER, Okla.-Former Baylor School golfer Harris English clinched the University of Georgia's 3-1-1 victory over Illinois in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championship tournament Friday. English, a senior, beat Luke Guthrie 3 and 2 and never trailed in the match. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs will play today in the semifinals at Karsten Creek Golf Course against Duke, which upset top-seeded UCLA 3-1-1. Defending champion Augusta State beat No. 2 seed Georgia Tech 3-2 in a playoff, and No. 3 seed Oklahoma State defeated Ohio State 3-1-1 to advance on its home course.

BASEBALL

• LEWISTON, Idaho-The Lee University baseball team finished third in the NAIA World Series with a 10-2 loss Friday afternoon to Lubbock Christian, which won the 2009 title. The Texas team faced Concordia of California for the championship Friday night. Lee (51-14) has finished third twice and second twice in the last four years, and in his five years as head coach Mark Brew has guided Lee to at least 50 wins and a World Series appearance every time. The Flames took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Texas team (50-13) scored two in third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth. Austin Stewart was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs and Nate Peterson had two hits and three RBIs for Lubbock Christian, while Ryan Burnaman was 3-for-4 and scored twice and David Cruz was 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Seth Walker was 2-for-3 and scored a run for Lee, and Jonathan Clark and Joe Ramirez had the RBIs. Starting pitcher Maxx Catapano (9-5) took the loss.

AUTO RACING

• Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., won the 50-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Series race Thursday night at Cleveland Speedway, with Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., second and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., third. Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., and Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., were third and fifth. Drivers from Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, West Virginia, Mississippi, Illinois, California, Alabama and Wisconsin also took part in the race that benefited juvenile diabetes research. It was the 24th series win and second in a row for Owens. "The trace was in excellent shape tonight - maybe the best track we've seen this year," he said.

TENNIS

• The Tennessee State Junior Qualifying Championships for 18- and 16-under tennis players began Friday at the Champions Club with doubles play in all four divisions. The tournament is scheduled to end Tuesday.
