5 at 10: LeBron James, old-school SEC match-ups and the former 2004 National Champions

Not a good day to be a USC fan or to be Lenny Dykstra. Let’s get to it.

From the 7-Up Stinks Studios, here we go...

There’s officially no 2004 BCS champ

Well, let’s put USC vacating the 2004 BCS title in the files of, “Duh, what else is going on, Sherlock?”

This is no real shock.

Here are two things that has the 5-at-10 interested:

— One, if the BCS tried to reclaim the eight-figure paycheck USC received for each BCS trip, then the college administrators would be really focused on making sure the programs are on the level. Imagine the hand-wringing that would be going on if USC had to give back $20 million.

— Two, the BCS has decided to leave the 2004 championship vacant. The 5-at-10 is undecided on this. Does Auburn, which finished unbeaten, deserve the title? Does Oklahoma, which was ranked No. 2 going into the BCS game, deserve the title since the Sooners’ lone loss was to the tarnished Trojans? Hard to say, and each side has an argument.

One final thing, the lawsuit filed by Todd McNair against the NCAA could be a game-changer. Here’s my column on it in today’s TFP.

Game 4 tonight — “Rise of the Machine”

All of the LeBron-bashing has become tired. Dude is getting hammered across the sports scene, and for what, missing a couple of fourth-quarter shots? For making the proper pass and for playing lock-down D? Puh-lease.

Much too often fans —and media yahoos like the 5-at-10 — complain about players treating their game like a business. “They’re in it for the money.” “They don’t care if they win or lose.” “Blah, blah, blah.”

Well, LeBron said point blank, he wants to win it all. He took less money to go to Miami. Sure, “The Decision” will go down with Shelley Long leaving “Cheers” as bad career moves, but when’s enough enough?

Consider the 5-at-10 now pro-LeBron, if for no other reason than the anti-LeBron bandwagon is overflowing right now.

As for tonight, let’s just say, we’d be surprised if LeBron was not in full-blown “Terminator” mode. And not that crudy “Terminator III” nonsense. No, this will be a full-blown “I’ll be back,” and “I’ll take the plasma rifle with the 40-watt range,” Terminator-mode.

And it still may not be enough, because the NBA is the NBA, and we all know that the series will get back to Miami for a Game 6 on Sunday night. Let’s drag this out, fellows, because who knows when the next NBA Finals will be.

Hey, there’s a draft going on

The 5-at-10 loves the draft. You know this.

The MLB draft is still a draft, even if we don’t know the names that are being called. Here’s our theory: draft college hitters and high school pitchers. There, now you our theory on the baseball draft.

That said, did you see in other baseball news that Lenny Dykstra was jailed Monday on charges of grand theft auto and drug possession after using false info to lease a car.

Dykstra was charged with 25 felony and misdemeanor counts of GTA and other assorted crimes. He faces up to 12 years in the joint if convicted.

You know, EC was right, you can’t trust players who played for the Mets and the Phillies — AKA the New Delphia Millies. So it goes.

Slow southern night

Wow, no NBA game Monday. The Braves were off. The poker tournament replays (yes, they always suck us in, much to the chagrin of the Mrs. 5-at-10) and we all know most of you spent entirely too long watching college softball last night. It’s OK, really.

Two things that are going to carry us through the next six weeks: First, the 5-at-10 is committed to bringing out the best in summer sports; second, it’s not going to be long before Fox Sports South and the rest of the fringe sports networks start replaying classic SEC football games. Good times, gang, good times.

Those mid-2000s Auburn-LSU grudge matches were awesome. The mid-1990s Florida teams and the early-1990s Bama teams. Georgia in a river of nail-biters, and Tennessee and Peyton in those all-white uniforms with the obscenely big numbers.

Hey, P-Davi, how many days until the start of college football.

This and that

— Welcome back, Plaxico. Welcome back Tiki Barber. Heck, at this rate Lawrence Taylor may be calling his agent in the next week to 10 days.

— Cliff Lee was dealing for the Phillies in a 3-1 win over the Dodgers on Monday. Dude threw 17 consecutive strikes at one point. The 5-at-10 might have a hard time throwing consecutive anythings. As much as we hate to admit it, the Phillies are going to be tough to catch (especially if Dan Uggla continues to swing like a rusty gate).

— As for Monday’s suggestion about Dan Uggla jokes, we’re in. Here, we’ll start.

“A priest, a rabbi and Dan Uggla walk into a bar — wait that can’t happen, if Dan Uggla walked, he’d get on base, and that just doesn’t happen. Oh, well.”

Lenny Dyksra...you got what was coming to you and I hope you called Darron Dalton yesterday before you got fitted for steel bracelets ....the rest of the MLB better take notice....this is what happens when you play for the Mets and the Phillies....tisk tisk...

All I can say is...I do not want to be Jason Terry, Robert Patrick or T-1000...if Lebron is playing the part of Terminator! He is likely to go for 40...or he might even have one of those type games that ppl talk about forever...a quadruple double....10 Steals, 10 blocks, 10 assists, and 10 rebs...but my bet is that D-Wade carries the team...and we get a solid night out of Bron and Bosh...20 pts each...10 or more boards each...D-Wade...

If Dirk wants this to go back to Miami he better put up 50!!! or "fünfzig - der fünfzigste, der 50" and Jason terry better back up all the trash talkin he was doing yesterday after shoot around...saying Lebron has to do it every game...did that sound like a challenge to anyone else???

Like I said...I dont wanna be T-100 if the Bron is Playing Terminator...sorry...I'll pass...and Terry may not even get a pass...

I hope the 5 @10 got my email question...I cant wait to see your answers!!!

Im no longer a PLaxico Burress fan...why?? hes wearing a Philly hat..homeboy just got out of the big house?!?!?! If I ever needed a reason to not go to jail other than the obvious..its the fact they hand out Phillie Hat upon entering the Jail system...no thanks!!!! Wonder if thats how they got Dykstra????

Ill be honest..i Went home and slept until WWE Monday Night Raw came on!! then I did some homework...First day of College Summer Semester was yesterday!! WOOOOO

Buckle up Johnny Vols Fan, because the only way the timing of this makes sense is if there's more trouble than expected on the horizon. This screams of the NCAA's dreaded four-word phrase that makes fans' and administrators' toes curl. You know the four-word phrase that sounds a lot like "back of dense-tutional patrol"

EC —

Here's saying LeBron goes Biblical tonight — and has at least two thunder dunks that will cause even the Dallas crowd to go, "Whoa."

And we got your question and it's jumpstarted an extra special Mailbag idea that we'll share later.

Oso —

This is crazy stuff. And Weeds has a column up now on Hamilton, and we're going to write something on this, too.

Buckle up folks, going to be a long day.

ok quickly....prolly the best thing the Vols could have happen to them IMO. I mean the latest hiring debacles should be proof of that alone. I mean the man should have been fired after the Kiffin mess, but Vols nation was merciful. Time to move on. Can anyone see Fulmer up for this position other than me?!?

June 7, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.
Eustice_Chase said...

I can see his name being thrown around the water cooler...I just dont know how likely it is to happen..i for one would NOT want Fulmer in that position....Fulmer is still on the payroll..right??? sheesh....

How about Mark Jackson being sacrificed by the NBA Coaches association to Coach the Golden State Warriors??? I think he will make a great coach considering he has ZERO coaching experience...but who would have thought he would get a job before VAN GUNDY!!! HAHAHAH...love that commercial!

Hamilton's time was coming, there's no doubt, but the timing of this is certainly curious.

Fulmer's name may be mentioned among the fan base, but if he even gets a phone call it would be out of courtesy. In fact, our TFP ace David Paschall is trying to track down Fulmer as we speak.

The AD job at major colleges has changed so much, it would be hard to see Fulmer or any other old-school coach (with the exception of VAN GUNDY!, of course) getting that kind of job. Hamilton had an MBA for crying out loud.

Here's the kicker, after Hamilton's buyout — which was $1.33 million and includes eight seasons tickets for football and men's hoops for life — the Vols are on the hook for more than $11 million to employees that no longer work there.

EC —

Agree that Mark Jackson will be good. And the Warriors have a couple of nice pieces in Monta Ellis and Stef Curry.

"It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them."

Hamilton got caught sending pics of himself shirtless over company email didnt he? Cmon Cinco....lets getta scandal going!! (as if everything he did was scandalous enough!) Although i have to admit..hate to see a good guy like this go down in this manner. Great guy, great individual, not sure he was the right man for that position though. Oh well, Hindsight is twenty-twenty...

MLB pickings were slim last night, like hits for Dan Uggla (thanks, and drive home safe!). Dan Fogelberg has had more hits than Dan Uggla this year (you guys are great! tip your wait staff!) Watched Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final (no s at the end; sorry, Senor Shirtless, I know not why that is). Lots of hitting. Lots of chirping. Lots of anger in the air. Man, it was great.

I don't think young Bryce Harper reads the 5 at 10 (he should ... if he can read), but I believe this may be pertinent advice to him: Don't. Dig. In.

Eustice_Chase said...

Ellis is a strong piece...and his name is mentioned in trade talks for Andre Igudola...will doug collins sign off??? $11 Million for employees that no longer work there!!! wow I had no idea it was that much!

BIspy4...nice Uggla jokes...very nice indeed....

June 7, 2011 at 2:04 p.m.
jgreeson said...

BIspy —

If Harper does not read the 5-at-10, that explains a big part of his problem. And since you're our hockey guy around these parts can you make sure we have a Game 7. We'd watch a Game 7 — even pull for those punk Bruins you love so much.

And we concur on the Uggla jokes. Nothing better than a good one-liner. One-liner, that kind of sums up Uggla's season to date huh? Thank you, thank you, and remember, the 7:30 show is different from the 9:30 show.

EC —

In the changing face of the NBA — it's becoming a jump-shooting league again, and it will stay that way until the rules are changed/tweaked again — here's saying that Ellis has more value than Andre, who is a freakish athlete.

And let me say, your mailbag question has been the topic of conversation among half the newsroom today. Great effort.

Well, I cant take all the credit...even though I thought of the question on my own, Composed the email...sent it...well I guess I can take all the credit...but I have to thank the 5@10 Family...without your help...this wouldn't be possible!

Dan Uggla just tweeted a message to all of his followers, sounded something like this.." Where are my Uggla Ugglies??? Have no fear Im gonna snap out of my slump..Nate McClouth has been giving me some pointers inside the batting cage today...thanks Nate!!!"
