The American people have elected many fine members of Congress over the centuries. But we also have elected some members who have proved, by their own actions, to be not only stupid but immoral.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, a 46-year-old New York Democrat, is giving us one current example of sophomoric immorality and abominably bad judgment.

The married congressman has publicly admitted to "inappropriate" behavior - to say the least. He sent a disgusting personal photo to a young woman and exchanged questionable messages with six women both before and after his marriage.

He carefully declared that he had not used government computers in his misdeeds, as though that somehow made his actions tolerable.

"This was me doing a dumb thing and doing it repeatedly and lying about it," he said.

But he does not intend to resign! Who would want to keep that kind of congressman?

Not only is he a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, but - until now - he had been expected to run for the powerful position of mayor of New York City in 2013.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has called for an ethics committee examination of whether Weiner has broken House rules.

That, though appropriate, should not be necessary: He obviously should have resigned from Congress immediately. But, typical of his bad judgment, he said he does not believe his behavior will affect his work in Congress!

Most Americans probably had never heard of this particular congressman before the scandal. He should promptly exit Congress, and never be heard of in any government capacity again.
