Council axes government channel

Chattanooga will pass on funding a government TV channel next year that would have put City Council meetings on air for a 24-hour, seven-day a week network.

The council instead will take $215,000 allocated to WTCI-Channel 45 and spread it across social services agencies.

Council members met for 90 minutes this morning to talk about the 2011-2012 fiscal year budget. The largest discussion during the meeting was how to fund social service and quasi-governmental agencies.

The council asked the mayor's office to come back with a proposal next week that spreads the WTCI money across those other agencies.
