Singing, dancing cutlery onstage

BARRY COURTER: Lisa, would you agree with me that the only thing better than a singing clock is a singing candelabra?

LISA DENTON: And don't forget singing and dancing cutlery, teapot and cup. Throw in a featherduster, wardrobe and footstool, and you've got the makings of an enchanted castle in "Disney's Beauty and the Beast." It's one of my favorite Disney stories - I can so identify with the "bookish" Belle - and it's coming to Memorial Auditorium for one show tonight. You may recall that it was snowed out in January and was rescheduled for summer.

BARRY: Dancing cutlery is always a good time. Flying knives and forks, as in thrown in anger, however, are another matter.

Anyway, the score is by Alan Menken, who also did "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Pocahontas," among others. Each of those three and "Beauty" earned him two Academy Awards. It's good stuff for kids and grown-ups.

LISA: Speaking of spectacles, eight Chattanooga dancers will take the Tivoli Theatre stage on Saturday for Dancing With the Stars Chattanooga, a chance to show the fancy footwork they've learned from Fred Astaire Dance Studio instructors. This benefit for the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults is based on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."

Maksim Chmerkovskiy, one of the show's professionals, will be the special guest for a second time. You may recall that last year he got caught up in the excitement of the moment and auctioned off two pairs of his pants for charity. I'm not sure what he was wearing when he left, other than a smile.

BARRY: Who walks around with two pairs of pants? When we sell old clothes at our house it's called a yard sale. I might try calling it an auction next time.

Nightfall kicks back into gear Friday after taking two weeks off for Riverbend. Michael Kaeshammer is this week's headliner. He plays boogie-woogie piano music, which is always fun, and you get to say boogie-woogie.
