OUTDOOR NOTES

Chickamauga Battlefield trails closed

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park has temporarily closed the Chickamauga Battlefield trail system, due to severe damage from a storm last weekend. Battlefield superintendent Cathleen Cook has issued a temporary closure of all walking and horse trails within the park. The trail closures will reduce the potential for visitor injury from falling trees and other hazards. For more information, contact facility manager Don Stephenson at 423-752-5213, ext. 125.


Cantrell wins NTB junior fishing national title

EUFAULA, Ala. — Dakota Cantrell of Monteagle, Tenn., won the National Bass Fishing Trail’s junior national championship on Friday and repeated as NBT Junior Angler of the Year. Cantrell cught 21.33 pounds of fish over three days to finish almost four pounds better than second-place finished Garrett Jones from the Alabama North District. Hank Lowrie of Palmer, Tenn., finished 10th in the junior division. Despite not placing in the adult division, Tennessee District Director Hank Lowrie of Palmer was named National Director of the Year for the second time. Lowrie was also elected to the NBT board of directors as the National Junior Director for a two-year term.

Chickamauga Battlefield bicycle tour: Saturday, 9:30 a.m., from visitors center; leisurely 6- to 8-mile ride with interpretive rangers explaining park history; bring own bike or borrow one from Outdoor Chattanooga fleet. Call 706-866-9241.

Maclellan Island Cleanup: Saturday 10 a.m.-noon. L2Boards will host volunteer cleanups on the Maclellan Island Wildlife Sanctuary. Volunteers will paddle out to the island via kayak, canoe or standup paddleboard or catch a power boat shuttle from the Marine Max dock next to the Passage fountains. Work will involve clearing brush and blown down from trails and campsites. Volunteers should wear long pants and long sleeve shirts and bring their own work gloves and tools. 5-Points Trail Work Day w/SORBA-Chattanooga: Saturday 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The Chattanooga chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association will host a work and activity day on the Cloudland Canyon Connector Trail. Volunteers are needed to do finish work on cleared trail. Bring water, work gloves and a change of clothes to hike or bike in the afternoon. SORBA will provide tools and lunch.
