Runner of the Year

Randall Freeman

The Ooltewah senior qualified for four events at the Class AAA state meet and finished fourth in the grueling decathlon, which included winning the discus and shot put disciplines. He also competed in the shot put, triple jump and discus events at the state meet and for the regular season had the area's top shot distance by more than a foot and was tops among area triple jumpers as well. He ranked second in the area in the discus and was among the area's top five 400-meter runners.

Freeman has signed a football scholarship with Carson-Newman.

"He didn't have the state meet he wanted, but he still dominated area competition," Ooltewah coach Angela Warren said. "He's just such a versatile athlete. This was his second year to even try the decathlon, and he made it to the state without even competing in the pole vault portion. He's very coachable. Whatever you ask him to do, he'll do it. And he's usually really good at whatever we ask him to do. I tell him he's like a freak of nature as an athlete."

Coach of the Year

Larry Cotton

In Cotton's 29th year as Bradley Central's coach, the Bears were undefeated during the regular season, including winning the 17-team Riverdale Invitational and the 35-team Optimist Championship. Bradley finished in the top 20 at the Vol Classic, which included teams from across the nation, and was the region runner-up heading into the state meet.

"Experience was the biggest thing for us," Cotton said. "These guys have been with us since they were freshmen, and they were due. They were hungry to prove themselves. This was very much a team effort this year. We didn't have just one kid who carried us; we had several who we knew could place high and score points for us.

"We're more known as a distance runner school, but for the last couple of years we've had some of the best sprinters in the area. Those sprinters carried us this year. The trick now is to get the sprinters and distance runners together at the same time and have a chance at a state championship."
