Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said he's reviewing the resumes of 10 applicants to become Hamilton County's next human resources director, including one from the chief judicial magistrate.
Coppinger is looking to replace Rebecca Hunter, who became commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Human Resources for Gov. Bill Haslam.
All 10 applicants work in government jobs and most work for the county. Chief Magistrate Larry Ables also is the nephew by marriage of County Commission Chairman Larry Henry. Henry said he will abstain from voting to approve the hire because of the relationship.
Ables said he's looking for a change.
"My undergraduate degree is public administration, and I just thought that it would be interesting to pursue something a little different," Ables said.
Coppinger said it's possible he will ask some candidates for more in-depth interviews. He said he doesn't have a timeline for the hire.
"I'm not going to rush to judgment," he said. "It's an extremely important position."
